Easter Weekend Muddy Guide (14-20 April)

It’s Thursday, it’s Easter and we are careering wildly into the long weekend. Hell, we’re about to trip over it. Crack open the rosé and take a deep breath…

Easter Trail, Lydiard Park, 16 April

Hop into Easter by following a trail from the Coach House around the lakes, woodlands and lawns. Search for clues and….OK, OK, we’re done to death with finding those pesky eggs, but there’ll be sure to be loads of chocolate at the end of it.

Parkour, Salisbury Arts Centre, 18 and 19 April

Fancy jumping off a building? Doing splits along a high wall? Oh, sorry, that was just me on Saturday night. Sign the kids up (age 11+) for a bit of parkour as part of The Fold Out Festival – a new festival for teenagers taking place across Salisbury. There’s freerunning, tricking, physical dance, wall lifts, partner flips, vaulting, spinning and exploding. Time for a lie down, then.

Junior Open, Bowood, Calne, 18 April

Golf? GOLF? I know, I know, snooze time, but actually (I am told) golf is quite funky these days. Tight sweaters, diamond socks, quirky shoes…I can see I’m losing you. But picture yourself in the utterly gorgeous surrounds of Bowood, sun shining, G&T in hand, the little terrors somewhere over there, out of site on the golf course. Now that’s more like it. Sign ’em up for Bowood’s Junior Open and they might just come back with a trophy in their sweaty little hands.

Dinosaur World, Wyvern Theatre, Swindon, 19-20 April

Dare to experience the dangers of a seriously terrifying-looking T-Rex in this interactive, brand new show for families. Grab your compass and join the intrepid explorers cross uncharted territories to be eaten alive by Triceratops, Giraffatitan and Segnosaurus, to name a few. Jurassic World, eat your heart out.

Easter crafts, Stonehenge, nr Amesbury, 14-20 April

Use those whoppers of stones (with a bit of wool and clay) to get down and dirty with art and craft activities. Felted pictures, willow shapes, clay animals, all that good stuff…

Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race, Devizes, Easter Weekend

One of the toughest open-to-all endurance events in the world. Crews set out on Good Friday, aiming to finish at Westminster Bridge opposite the Houses of Parliament on Easter Sunday morning. The race is 125 miles long and, I’m told, is a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and planning. Phew. Good job I’m just watching.

Mad Science Easter Camps, Salisbury Cathedral School, 18-21 April

Got a crazy scientist on your hands? It’s educational but a lorra fun at these easter camps. They can make gross slime, create the next super car, blow up the science lab… For ages 4-11.

Easter Adventure Quest, Old Sarum, Salisbury, 14-17 April

Be a challenge champion this Easter weekend – be greeted by a king, a butler or a Roman centurion who’ll be able to help you crack the clues as you explore Old Sarum Iron Age Hillfort. There is, of course, a reward.

Easter Eggstravaganza, Monkey World, Wareham, 14-17 April

Outdoor Adventure Holiday Club, Romsey, 19 April

Are they bored of the electronic babysitter? Well no, obviously, but if you can peel, drag, yank them off the iPad you could get ’em kitted out as a real outdoor explorer. Jumping, crawling, running, all that good outdoorsy stuff.

Imber Village opens

If you don’t know this place – and you need to be seriously in the know to have stumbled over it. It’s new to me! – it is seriously spooky. The villagers of Imber were ousted from their homes in 1943 to make way for American troops training for the liberation of Europe. Unbelievably, they were never allowed back. The village is only open for a handful of days each year – spot the ghosts from 6pm 13th April to 8am 18th April. Woooooo…..

Easter at the Museum, Salisbury Museum, Sat 15 April

OK, better find a few things to keep the Mudlets entertained. How about making a giant mosaic for Easter? Keep ’em busy with storytelling and an Easter archaeology trail with prizes too. Yep, that’ll do.

Wild Wednesday, Dinton Park and Philipps House, Dinton, Wed 19 April

Get them to tick off some of those pesky 50 things to do before you’re 11¾. There’s some pretty wild stuff the Mudlets can do with the Wiltshire Landscape Rangers at Dinton Park woods – char-burning inedible food on a campfire, building dens to get filthy in, searching for critters, falling headfirst into ponds – they’ll love it.

Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt, Stourhead, Warminster, 14-17 April

Obviously gotta get some chocolate in – at Stourhead the Mudlets can find that elusive Easter bunny and scoff all the chocolate eggs. Just make sure they keep a few for you.
