Sex and the sisterhood
Grab a Cosmo, Sex And The City is making a comeback… in Wiltshire! Meet New Yorker Kerry Ipema.
Will they or won’t they they make Sex And The City 3? It’s a subject as hotly debated as the Spice Girls reunion. Spoiler alert! Never going to happen. On both counts. SJP and Kim Cattrell would be stabbing each other with their Manolos if they were put in the same room together. But don’t drown your sorrows in a bath of Cosmopolitans just yet. Good news, SATC fans, a new one woman show is about to give you your girl power fix – 20 years after Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte burst onto screens.
Comedic whirling dervish Kerry Ipema – a 20 year old New Yorker – stars in One Woman Sex And The City: A Parody on Love, Friendship, and Shoes. Kerry will totter through all 6 series, playing 24 characters covering the naked dress, the tantric sex demonstration, the post-it note, and “he’s just not that into you”.
Kerry took time out from brunch, banter, men and Monolos to have a quick natter with Muddy Berks’ editor Rachel before she boards her flight to the UK and heads straight to the nearest pub for a pint.
What can we expect from your one woman show?
A lot of drunk women. Just kidding, you can expect a wonderful group of people who want to let their hair down and have a great time. I want our audiences to leave feeling empowered, belly hurt from laughing, and grateful for their friendships.
How do you prepare for a show?
I listen to the pre-show music. It is a list of songs by predominately female artists, and it’s upbeat and fun and gives me a lot of energy for the show. I also love listening to all of the women chat and laugh in the audience before the show. It definitely gives me a big energy boost before the show!
Is it hard playing all the Sex And The City women?
It’s more fun than anything. I play 24 characters in the show – and believe it or not, I find it more energizing than exhausting. My difficulty is coming down after the show. The four central women are so different and so distinct, so it was fun making them clear from one another. For example, Charlotte has this Disney princess feel, Miranda has a stern cynical lawyer vibe, Carrie is always either clutching her chest or smoking a cigarette, and Samantha is, well, she’s faaaaaaabulous!
Is it hard to switch the SATC voices and personalities off? Are SJP and Kim Cattrall having a barney off stage?
I don’t feel like the characters follow me after the show. I am fortunate enough to be able to directly address the audience as Kerry (with a K, not a C) We really try and create a brunch like atmosphere with the show, complete with deal breakers and crazy date stories. I’m so excited to hear UK’s crazy date stories and deal breakers!
Which character is most like you and why?
I’m a Carrie with a Miranda rising. I think we are all a little bit of each of them, which is what makes the show so relatable! I certainly love playing Samantha because she has the best puns!Grab
You can only have one for the rest of your life, but which one? Sex, shoes or a Cosmopolitan.
NO. NO NO NO! ok, I’ll play. I guess I would choose shoes. I live in New York, so they are my car. Also, they make the outfit. Without a pair of shoes you can’t get a cosmo OR sex for that matter. Deciding what shoes to bring with me on tour will probably be the most time consuming part of my trip preparation.
Ok, quick fire questions:
What are you watching?
I rewatch The Office (both UK and US) fairly frequently, but I am currently watching the new season of New Girl, it just came out on Netflix.
What are you reading?
I am reading The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore, but I just finished Katy Tur’s Unbelievableand Hillary Clinton’s What Happened. What can I say, I love empowered women!
Last thing you bought?
A great vintage dress from a small town in the states, it’s my favorite thing to do on the road – scour thrift stores!
Biggest fashion mistake?
While touring a couple years ago I wore a very ill fitting pair of sweatpants. After seeing one too many photos, I decided they will never see the light of day again. You’re welcome world.
Biggest relationship mistake?
I am DEFINITELY too close to make that observation. I’m still in my 20s, it’s all about mistakes!
Describe yourself in 3 words
Enthusiastic, loyal, and empathetic.
If you were ever in charge of the world, what kind of world would we live in?
One where everyone has the same opportunities to reach their full potential. Also, a world where we can laugh a little more and take ourselves a little less seriously. Life is too short to not be fun.
What’s on your rider if you were a world leader?
I love meeting new people. I would want to meet people wherever I go. I also would like a good meal and a decent amount of sleep – but that might be asking too much!
Anything you’re looking forward to doing while you’re here?
Fish, Chips and a Pint.
Our kinda gal!
Don’t miss Kerry’s show – One Woman Sex & The City – at Wyvern Theatre, Swindon on 20 May. See you in the bar for a Cosmopolitan.
