The Frogmill, near Cheltenham

Muddy says: A superlative country pub near Cheltenham with grill-tastic food, home-from-home rooms and an events space to die for.

The latest addition to the Brakspear Gloucestershire pubs/hotels stable (Sheep on Sheep Street and The Porch House, both in Stow-on-the-Wold are their other go-to offerings), The Frogmill near Cheltenham has reopened after two years and it’s amazing! The decor is divine – a mix of haute interior touches, cosy style and original features – the food exquisite and the welcome and service so warm you won’t want to leave.

But back to the food. Head chef Jonathon Pons makes the seasonal, locally sourced ingredients sing with the help of a Spanish Josper coal-fired oven and American smoker, which turns out meals you can’t imagine – veg, fish, meat are all transformed by Pons and his team and their tools into delectable dishes that make your mouth water. Big flavours and big portions, this is hearty fare at its best, from the house smoked whiskey glazed pork belly ribs to the Santa Fe salad. Puddings also rate high in the flavour stakes so be careful to leave space for one.

If you’re overnighting (and can I recommend you do even if you live down the road, it’s that nice), you’re also in for a treat as the rooms and suites are bliss, with chic furnishings, Feather & Black beds, indulgent bathrooms, even private terraces and balconies in some of the rooms. And you can bring your dog!

The inn also knows how to throw an event, be it a wedding, big birthday bash or corporate takeover. The Mill Room, which can cater for up to 150 seated guests and 200 standing, is gorgeous with contemporary chandeliers hanging from its vaulted ceiling and super-duper acoustics.

Essentially, it’s a proper all-rounder country pub – did I mention the generous and picturesque outdoor space with dining terrace, wisteria-draped pergola and the original watermill it gets its name from? Perfect for summer – and with roaring open fires blazing when the weather gets parky, it’s perfect for winter too!
