A Very Clean Day Out
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's...Well, I'm not quite sure what it is. But it's pretty cool!
At first look I wasn’t sure what to make of Hillbrush – is it a cafe? A restaurant? A kid’s zone? Do you visit for a day out? Go there to shop? Stop en-route for a bite to eat? All of the above? It’s a crazy, eclectic place but you know what – I think it’s pretty cool.
Hillbrush has been manufacturing cleaning equipment in Mere, Wilts, since 1922 (yes, I am writing a blog post about a cleaning company. I kid you not. But stay with me…) but now they have only gone and opened a brand spanking new, sparkling and squeaky clean (see what I did there?) visitor centre so I can shop ’til I drop amongst the quirky kitchenware, personal grooming kits and acres of brushes and brooms. Well, they’re fab pressies for the person who has everything…
Exhausted from shopping and with kids fully installed in the Kid’s Corner, I’m ready to tuck into some grub. The menu looks fab (quire frankly anywhere that does whole baked Camembert is good in my book) and there’s plenty the Mudlets would like (if I can be bothered to feed them). Sharing platters include flatbread, crudites and hummus, as well as a fish platter and a charcuterie board, moving onto burgers with pulled pork and haloumi toppings, or a selection of seasonal, hearty pastas. Go lighter with a sandwich or salad (obviously not me) or pig out on brunch – Full English, Eggs Benedict, or peanut butter and banana waffles, anyone?
Ingredients are locally sourced and super fresh, with local suppliers including the wonderful Yapp Brothers Wine Merchants (Finalists in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2017), Lavender Blue Bakery and Penleigh Farm Butchers.
Set in a gorgeous location on the outskirts of Mere, Visit Hillbrush is a great place to stop off and fill your boots (and your boot) on the way to wherever. There’s loads of events going on here too and, oh, did I say there’s a brush-making museum here. Oh yes, there is!
