Summer holidays in Wiltshire – What’s on for kids

The holidays - a chance to reconnect with your little darlings for six whole weeks or more. Don’t reach for the gin just yet, get your hands on our trusty guide to clubs, camps and day’s out instead.

SPORT Tennis Camp, Salisbury, 27-29 July and 10-12 Aug

New balls please. Encourage your own Andy Murray or Johana Konta by signing them up for this LTA approved kids camp at Salisbury Tennis Club. Each session covers all the usuals – technique, fun drills, competitive games, shouting “You CANNOT be serious!” (not really) – but more importantly, gets them off their screen for A WHOLE DAY. Suitable for kids aged 5-16 years, price £32.50 per day.

PERFORMANCE Kids Summer Circus Club, Trowbridge, 9-12 August

Having one of those days/weeks/years when you wish your kids would run off and join the circus? Well now they can. It’s juggling, spinning and hanging upside down a go-go at this fun club run by SASS Circus Space. All the antics culminate in a show on the last day. Ooos and ahhhs at the ready. Suitable for 5-11 year-olds. Email to book.

BOAT TRIP Pirates ahoy, Bradford-on-Avon, 27 July and 3, 10, 17 and 24 August

Shiver-me-timbers. Grab your motley crew (plus parrot, golden earrings and pieces of eight – you know the drill) for a trip on a pirate galleon. No need to head to the Caribbean either, these fun, hour-long excursions take place on the friendly waters of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Book in advance at

Calling all daredevils. Whether skate boards, inlines, scooters or BMX are junior’s cup of tea, RampNation is the place to be. Featuring bespoke ramps, half-pipes and grind rails (don’t worry, this will mean something to your kids) this is their idea of Skate Heaven. Book them in for a general or age-tailored session, or hone their skills with a lesson.

ESCAPE Spectre at Live Escape Rooms, Salisbury

On the hunt for a teen-friendly treat or a spot of family bonding, then this five star escape game should win you major brownie points. Well, you never know. Spooky shenanigans are afoot at the RESPECT genetic research station where scientists and their families have disappeared. Can your crew pull together to figure out what’s going on? Prepare for major brain ache during this hour long session featuring a fab storyline and top notch special effects. 10 – 7 daily.

COOKERY The Farm Cookery School, Chippenham

What do you get if you cross a doughnut with a muffin? Yes, a duffin. It’s just one of the delish dishes on this summer’s holiday clubs menu. With other options covering teaching your kids to make chicken burritos and even a Full English – enrol them for one of the day long clubs or 2 day camps, and you might be able to hang up your apron for good. Bon appetit.

RIDING Pony days, Rein & Shein, Braydon 12 & 13 Aug, 2 & 3 Sept

Horse mad sprogs will be chomping at the bit (sorry!) to go on one of these uber popular days in North Wilts. They’re crammed full of riding, games, stable routines and grooming galore. Giddy up because early booking’s advised. £80 per child.

CUTE ANIMALS Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm

Expect a cuteness overload at Cholderton Charlies where kids (oh go on then, and you too) can cuddle and learn to take care of the four-legged residents including rabbits, ponies, donkeys, goats and sheep. Should the heavens open, unlikely we know, there is, praise be, a decent caff, The Ewe. Bribe the kids with an ice-cream and you might get to check out the resident Bluestone Vineyard. Book a tour to try their incredible fizz, or buy a bottle from the farm shop. Whatever get’s you through the hols…

SAFARI Longleat, Warminster

Who wants to go on an African safari anyway (said no one, ever) but given that one’s not exactly looking likely this year, Longleat’s Safari Drive-through is a damn fine stand in. The Park’s the place to see all manner of exotic animals, including lions, wolves, giraffes and tigers (yes, tigers). There’s also an Animal Handling Hall for anyone wishing to get up close and personal with tarantulas and snakes. (NB that won’t be me).

A DAY AT THE FARMYARD Roves Farm, Sevenhampton

Meet and feed the farmyard residents and take part in loads of family activities scheduled throughout the hols at this fave spot near Swindon. Shetland ponies, alpacas and donkeys are waiting for you. Book on line.

WALK THE TREETOPS Jungleparc, Lydiard Park, Swindon

Swing in the treetops at Jungleparc this summer, with loads of activities are suitable for children as young as three. And if you’re a big kid or adult – and are feeling extra brave – there is the Xplorer course which, be warned, is VERY high.
