Rustiq Fitness, Winsley

Worried about carrying a spare tyre? Well by hauling an actual real one down at this outdoor farmyard gym, you’ll soon be thinking more beaut than bulge. Here’s how.

We all know that exercising in the fresh air is good for you – it increases the amount of oxygen we get to our lungs, which helps to improve lung capacity and reenergises white blood cells which boosts our immune system. But the thought of running in the rain, dark or mud doesn’t always sound that appealing when there’s a new season of Selling Sunset on Netflix and a box of Maltesers in the snack drawer. Which is why Rustiq Fitness in Winsley, just outside Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, is such a genius idea.

Set on a real-life farmyard, classes are held in a combination of indoor (barn) and outdoor (yard) spaces and because they are all group workouts, there’s always someone there to keep you motivated, even if you book at PT session – plus it’s fun too – and that will always keep you turning up. Sessions are 50 minutes long and scheduled at easy-to-make times like before or after school drop off (at 7:15 or 9:15 am) and evenings at 6 or 7 (although there are some daytime classes available) and include Yard (cardio bootcamps), Grip (strength-builders) and Combine (HIT sessions of strength and cardio). There are also classes for Mums (low-intensity, post-natal workouts), Teens (strength & cardio) and Yoga in the sunny and warm weather, and inside in a lovely barn space.

So far(m), so norm (ish) except that when you get there, you’ll be using a combo of regular indoor gym equipment like rowing machines and free weights, but in the open air unless the weather is biblical (in which case you head to the barn).  You’ll also be using  farmyard type-equipment like haybales, kegs and giant tractor tyres, (which you do see in indoor gyms, but never this many in so many sizes). Finally who can argue with the view? TV screens versus grazing sheep as you sweat yourself into shape? We know what we’d choose.

We can’t forget giving the trainers like founders Fran and Arron a big-up too, for their holistic, kind approach. They work within your mood and ability, rather than push you to the point of extinction and foster great community spirit, encouraging a sense of friendship and fun among its customers. They’re forging links with local businesses and organisations too, like Bradford on Avon Rugby Club and lifework communities, the new co-work community over on neighbouring Hartley Farm. So, if you feel like you’re in need of an overhaul, it’s time to moo-ve it, moo-ve it over to Rustiq Fitness.
