Howard’s House Hotel
Could this be the best kept secret in Wilts? Let’s find out, shall we?
Ah, now we’ve snooped out a seriously cool stay for you here, and it’s a real hidden gem. Wiltshire’s best kept secret is a country house hotel but in true indie style – it might be nestled in an idyllic Wiltshire village but everything inside is just that little bit different. And when it comes to cooking it really is unique – ingredients are homegrown or locally sourced, seasonal ALL the time and dishes inspirational. Bedrooms are indulgent with lots of lovely touches, the location is picture perfect and you’ll bump into wildlife (deer, pheasant, fowl) around every corner. Bliss.
The hotel offers sophisticated contemporary fare, with gorgeously styled rooms. Each of their nine ensuite bedrooms has its own individual character, with four poster beds, walk in showers or beautiful garden views, while the restaurant is a true gastro hotspot, with fruit and vegetables homegrown or locally sourced, and all meat, fish (and much of their wine) from local suppliers. They pride themselves on seasonal eating, with menus reflecting the finest flavours of each season. Indeed, the kitchen team have developed many ‘Howard’s House specialties’, including home-smoked meats and fish (unsurprisingly always popular with guests!). We’ve got our eyes on their spectacular Tasting Menu, seven courses of heaven including Ballantine of Quail with Jerusalem artichoke, and Pot Roasted Breast of Guinea Fowl.
Planning a wedding? You can’t beat this place. Their newly restored Coach House has been lovingly designed with privacy, comfort and luxury in mind, perfect for a drinks receptions or full wedding breakfast, plus their secret garden is just the spot for a marquee. In fact, nestled in its idyllic setting of Teffont Evias, Howard’s House holds the Good Hotel Guide’s Cesar Award for ‘Britain’s Most Romantic Hotel’ and has been handpicked by Delicious Magazine as the UK’s Top ‘Romantic Getaway’.
After complete and utter tranquillity? With its green fields and gin-clear chalk stream, resting in two acres of beautiful private gardens (showcasing romantic features including an original stone amphitheatre, melodic fountain trickling into a fish pond, and several pretty bowers and gazebos), this quintessentially English country house hotel has changed little over the years, with open fires, kitchen gardens and centuries of history.
