Huddled in the picturesque village of Swallowcliffe, the food is seasonal (obvs) and inventive – try the beetroot and vodka cured salmon or fillet of curried cod, plus they do a fab Sunday roast and Friday fish and chips. It’s got some pretty smart rooms too, so you can have your fill and then stagger up to bed.

Tucked away in the Nadder Valley away from life’s hustle and bustle, The Royal Oak has been an inn since 1852. Renovated in 2015, it has quite rightly built a reputation for high quality food, while its fab mix of old and new, with traditional thick beams and stone fireplaces as well as stylish wooden furniture by local designer Matthew Burt and a fabulous modern conservatory, really tickles our Muddy sense of style.

Their chefs are pretty passionate about creating truly seasonal dishes and there’s a good thud of support for local producers, farmers and suppliers. Rooms are light, bright and individually designed – comfortable and smart while still homely. Bring Rover and stay in their dog friendly room, and there’s a fire in the bar to him to snuggle up to. Fancy a pub quiz or Sunday afternoon of board games, darts, knit & natter and stitch and bitch?
