The Dog and Gun
This is everything a country pub should be – and more. Snug surroundings, cool cocktails and fabulously quirky touches.
We at Muddy love a great pub – good food, cosy fires to curl up in front of and, if we’re lucky, super smooth cocktails. If we can bring the Mudlets, great, and the pooch, even better. And if it’s got funky retro games, well, you’re ours for keeps. The good news, it’s all here at the Dog and Gun, and we’re settling in for the winter…
Located in the heart of Salisbury Plain, the Dog and Gun is everything a great country pub should be, plus it’s got a truly Muddy vibe with a really quirky atmosphere. A pub rescue project, it was set to be redeveloped in 2018 but the sale to the developers fell through and the a local family stepped in, carrying out a Grand Designs project with the help of friends and volunteers. And now – hey presto! It’s a rocking pub perfect for drinks, dinner, Sunday lunch and cosy overnights.
For foodies, this place is tip top. The gastro pub food is strictly ethically sourced, with a menu focussing on classic dishes with a twist, and always a daily specials board. We love the fact that they are open as a cafe during the day too, with gourmet coffee and breakfasts served from 8.30am. Oh, and they make their own ice cream!
The beer is local (obvs) and the wine list carefully selected, including English wines. Fancy a cocktail? The candlelit piano bar is the perfect place to celebrate with friends or to retreat to for an intimate date night. In the summer, head to the secret courtyard garden, full of flowers and fairy lights. Or, for something a bit different, there is a retro games room complete with a bar billiards table, board games and a gramophone player with a selection of records to choose from.
Staying over? There are five boutique bedrooms, each with its own unique feel and style combining contemporary and classic design. Two rooms interconnect for family or friends, and dogs are welcome in select rooms, with their own doggie bedtime package.
Getting hitched? If you’re looking for a funky wedding venue with a difference, check out T’he Barn. With a gorgeous vaulted ceiling, wooden flooring and reconditioned retro lighting, it has its own catering facilities plus a private courtyard garden area. Decorated with flowers and fairy lights, it’s a truly magical rustic wedding location. And – just a slight advantage – it’s got a pub on site!
Anything else? Well, they have Pub Quiz and Pizza Night once a month, with pizza served by local pop up The Slinky Fox, plus Classics & Coffee every first Sunday of the month – a great opportunity to meet other classic car enthusiasts and to take a look at an eclectic range of old cars and bikes.
And finally…they are dog friendly. Well behaved dogs are greeted with a warm welcome throughout the pub, and dog treats and a spare basket are available. A big Muddy tick from us!
