The Plough Inn
Muddy says: After a truly local county pub that wears its heart on its sleeve? Yup, we’ve found one just for you.
Nestled in the small Cotswold village of Cold Aston, The Plough Inn is a true country pub, with a true county pub garden. The three rooms are cute and quirky, produce is local and seasonal, with particular attention paid to animal welfare (just what we like to hear) and the bar a gin lover’s heaven. But it is the location that really impresses – Bourton on the Water, Stow on the Wold, Upper and Lower Slaughter – basically it’s bang in the middle of Cotswolds’ day-trip perfection. We love the story behind this pub – owners Tom and Josie have been friends since the age of 3 and, after high octane lives in London and the Big Apple, the pair returned to whirl their magic of hospitality and design in this gem of a pub – a truly local, warm and welcoming summery gaff.
Their ethos is to use the most local and seasonal produce to deliver exceptional food on the plate, and they do (exceptionally well, if we may say so) classic pub food as well as unusual gastro dishes. Meat is sourced from local butchers Martin’s Meats and Ruby & White, while local game dealers provide them with seasonal game. All fish is sustainable and caught around the British Isles. We’ve got our eyes on the Devilled Kidneys or Charcuterie Board (venison salami, smoken mutton and Suffolk chorizo) for starters, followed by Gressingham Duck Breast with fondant potato, Lamp Rump with puy lentils and butternut squash or Sirloin Steak with confit tomato for mains. Yum!
