The Potting Shed Pub, Crudwell

A top-notch gastropub menu and a cosy vibe combine to find that sweet spot where traditional meets subtle modern flair.

The North Wiltshire locals are lucky to have this picture perfect country pub, but it’s too good to let them keep it to themselves. Ideal for a day-trip – or longer, their gorgeous sister hotel The Rectory is a stone’s throw away – both Tetbury and Malmesbury nearby could certainly keep you entertained between meals.

Ancient stone fireplaces and gnarled beams make for a space that is at once cosy and airy, in a style that achieves that subtle balance between traditional and “done”. Likewise the menu is gastro-pub favourites produced simply but beautifully, with the lightness of a modern touch. From black pudding scotch egg, Double Gloucester soufflé and burgers (with a touch of Sriracha) all the way up to the Chateaubriand for two.

There is a sense that “local and seasonal” are more than just buzzwords here; that this is a place that cares about the detail, and it shows. Tom Parker-Bowles described it as “one of the best pub lunches I’ve had in years”. There is a pretty garden making the pub, in lots of ways, perfect for now.
