The Weighbridge Inn

Muddy says: An historic Cotswold inn with rustic charms aplenty, local real ales on tap and knockout 2in1 Pies.

In the 17th century this inn between Minchinhampton and Avening was the chosen hangout for woollen mill workers (check out the impressive collection of old iron tools hanging from the ceilings) and its charms haven’t faded in 400 years. A proper old-fashioned pub, rustic interiors, roaring fires and a ‘come on in’ ambience all await – and everyone’s welcome from the Muddy-boot (and Stiletto!) brigade to motley children and dogs.

And when you come, come hungry because The Weighbridge is the inventor of the 2in1 Pie. What’s that you ask? That is the pub’s inspired culinary invention which puts your braised beef and ale, say, side by side with your cauliflower and cheese, say, topping the pair of them with the shortest, crumbliest homemade pastry ever. There are veggie, vegan and gluten-free options, full-sized and minis, and they are a-mazing. You can ask for the recipe but you won’t be given it as it’s been a closely guarded secret, passed down from landlord to landlord for 40 years.

Wash them down with local real ales on tap or a glass of vino. And for the rare birds among you who don’t like pies, the rest of the menu is damned tasty too – think sausage and mash, cottage pie, mac ‘n’ cheese and burgers.

There’s a beamed hayloft upstairs that seats 40 which Muddy fancies as the perfect spot for a get-together (they cater kids’ parties too) or there’s a gorgeous private garden which come summer is shouting barbecue to us.

And if you’ve only got time to drop in for a drink but are salivating at the thought of a 2in1 Pie, you can take one with you to bake at home. Perfection!
