Got time on your hands?

Stuck at home and harbouring a secret desire to decorate? Make your home come to life with stunning art prints – just as if you had hired a top interior designer.

Muddy picks the brains of our favourite local designer Saffron Knight to get her ideas on how to beautify your home. Over to you, Saffron…

During these current challenging times most of us will be spending all of our time at home, checking domestic chores off the list, pottering around, establishing new routines and maybe learning some new perspectives on life.

As we digest and embrace our new experiences at home, you’re probably starting to imagine how your space could be improved. Is it looking tired and unloved? Well, let’s get sprucing.

It’s not about big budgets to achieve your desired look, just some simple approaches to give you the inspiration to reshape your space. Art prints are a great tool in bringing your space together, and a print can sometimes be the initial inspiration for how the rest of the space is created.

Prints are best used as statement pieces in the home to express ourselves. I shape my spaces with a mix of art prints around the home, some that remind me of certain times in my life, humorous anecdotes that help keep things light, a variety of artists and styles I adore.

You can use art prints to tie in beautifully with the upholstery and furnishings, not too over crowded or cluttered – remember everything needs its own breathing space to be seen and enjoyed. The balance of good taste is a fine line between clean lines and the right amount of accessories.

Refine and gather your staple pieces: vases, trinkets, cushions and throws. See these as your accessories for dressing the space and giving it that designer feel.

If you’re stuck on colour let one of your art prints lead the way and add gentle touches of colour that reflect the print.

Keep it simple! To let the staples really shine you need to surround them with more neutral tones, patterns and textures that compliment.

Don’t be afraid to add drama to your space. It gives it a high end luxury feel, and one of the most effective ways is with a bold print framed well.

The key is to have a space you want to be in, to entertain in, and that you feel relaxed in at any time of the day.

Start by selecting art prints that you love, think about the options for placement and whether the furnishings around them would compliment or distract.

Be playful and experimental at first, it may be better to switch certain chairs, cushions or throws around to suit where the prints will be placed.

Once you have the first rough idea of how you will place the prints, sit in all the seating spots in your space so you can see what it looks like from different angles.

I know it sounds silly but practice walking in and out of the room to see how it makes you feel when you see everything together.

You may need to adjust the heights of the prints, they may not be straight or you could need that pot plant upstairs in this new space layout.

Sometimes it’s a throw you’ve had tucked away for winter nights that would look great over one of the arms of the sofa, setting off the art print and bringing the look together. Cushions are a great accessory for moving colour into certain areas of the space that need it.

You’ve probably nailed the positioning by now. Pour yourself a glass of something heavenly and sit back, relax and enjoy your space. Feeling satisfied in our living spaces is so important right now – we need to feel comfortable, relaxed and positive and a dreary space is not what you want.

Happy decorating !
