What happened at the Muddy Wilts Awards 2022

You voted, they won - and then we threw them an awards bash in the blazing sun. Find out what happened when Wiltshire's finest indie businesses took the morning off to celebrate.

We really turned up the heat in Wiltshire on the 19th July – not only because it was an official national heatwave – the hottest UK day on record – but more importantly because it was the day of our Muddy Wiltshire Awards 2022!

Because we like to do things a bit differently in this part of the world, we held our do at brunchtime at Marlborough’s indie cinema The Parade, which is fabulously cool in all senses (to everyone’s relief there was air con inside). In case you haven’t been yet, The Parade is a state of the art picture house in a renovated Georgian building in the town centre, with 106 seats, a fully licensed bar, cafe and private hire balcony upstairs. Not forgetting a well-kept terrace at the front, complete with parasols that gives the whole venue a Riveria feel (although the blazing sun definitely helped with that!)

Anyway, at 10am our generous hosts opened their doors to around 40 beautiful and award-winning businesses and spoilt us all with pastries, coffee, mini-berry tarts (including a gluten-free and vegan version) and of course, Bucks Fizz. It was such a lot of fun to meet Wiltshire’s enterprising business folk in person and big them up for having done so well, especially given the last few years of that pesky little bug trying to scupper everyone’s success.

Making the most of the morning, we milled about on the terrace, with Commercial Manager Olivia (Russell) filling up the fizz and winners taking the chance to have their photos taken with their certificates by our official banner.

Later we dived into the cool of the cinema for a short speech by me, Muddy Wilts editor Cath (Rapley). I asked everyone to stand up when they heard their name being called which they did, everyone clapping each other riotously right up to the end. Go Wiltshire! Then it was back out into the sunshine for some more fizz and fun and a lot of selfies.

Of course, it’s not an awards-do without getting your close-up and our brilliantly talented photographer Ellie McCallum was tirelessly capturing all the fun in the sunshine. You can see her wonderful work here and on her website and I really recommend her for any shoot you might need.

When the sun was getting just a little too high in the sky, it was time to go, so our wonderful winners started to style their way out taking with them a goody bag with their official winners’ certficate, winners’ sticker and a fragrant artisan soap donated by local maker Apostle Soaps.

Olivia and I feel so blessed to be able to serve such a lot of vibrant, innovative and above all supportive businesses in Wiltshire who really do have each others’ backs and we want to thank them all for turning up and thank all businesses who took part. But most of all we want to thank you, the readers, for sharing our recommendations with us. This year there were around 850,000 votes cast nationally, each one for a little local business who all did a little happy dance! YOU did that.

Let’s do it all again next year.
