<p>For proper country pub vibes, make a beeline for The Three Tuns. This pretty whitewashed pub has earned multiple accolades for its fab menu and excellent Sunday lunches. It’s dog friendly too, making it hugely popular with hungry walkers.<strong> </strong></p>



<p>The charming village shop in Great Bedwyn also punches above its weight – with essentials, a cake counter, fresh bread from the bakery and post office all under one roof. There’s a Londis too, but for other enticing options pop four miles to Cobbs, a cracking farm shop with a butchery, lashings of fresh fruit and veg and an excellent café. </p>



<p>A 10 min hop takes you to Marlborough, where you’ll find oodles of foodie options, including <a href="https://dansrestaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dan’s At the Crown</a>, a popular haunt thanks to its modern European lunches, dinners and Sunday Lunch. The fabulous&nbsp;<a href="http://www.buncesbakehouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bunce’s</a> makes a great pitstop for brunch or cake, while <a href="https://coffilab.co.uk/locations/marlborough-coffee-store/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coffi Lab</a>&nbsp;will make your tail wag with joy. It’s smartly decorated, dog-friendly and serves excellent coffee and pastries.</p>

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the broad high street throngs with shoppers out for the regular markets, selling all kinds of stuff from locally produced meat and vegetables, to pots, plants, pashminas and pottery.</p>

<p>With the gorgeous Kennet and Avon canal on your doorstep and Savernake Forest (Britain’s largest private forest) next door, you’ll find upping your step count easy as pie. There are regular Pilates and yoga classes in the village hall to help you stretch it all out, plus two floodlit tennis courts and a thriving club. There are whispers that padel will also be an option soon too. Adult tennis coaching sessions run during the week and loads of kids get in on the act, thanks to a thriving juniors programme.</p>



<p>In nearby Marlborough, there’s tons going on for sport-minded folk, from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.marlborough-hockey.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hockey</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://marlboroughathletics.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">athletics</a>, plus a popular&nbsp;<a href="https://www.marlboroughrunningclub.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">running club</a> and a leisure centre. The cricket club is hugely popular too, and has a lovely large pitch near the canal. Movie buff in your midst? The village hall also plays host to regular quiz and film nights – recent screenings include <em>Conclave</em> and <em>Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. </em>Nearby<em> </em><a href="https://www.wiltonwindmill.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wilton Windmill</a><em> </em>(Wessex’s only working windmill) also hosts an annual family fun day and a murder mystery event, performed by theatre group Smoke and Mirrors. <p>Walks abound in this stunning party of the county, including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forestryengland.uk/savernake-forest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Savernake Forest</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/trails/the-ridgeway/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ridgeway</a>&nbsp;and The Great West Way. A hike up nearby Cherhill Down also takes you to one of Wiltshire’s stunning white horses, carved out of the chalky escarpment.&nbsp;Of course, you also have the Kennet and Avon canal bang on your doorstep in Great Bedwyn.</p>



<p>Don’t miss Wilton Windmill, perched proudly on the hillside, and Crofton Beam Engines, where you can watch original steam engines in action. You’re also only a half hour drive from Newbury, with its racecourse and Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey was famously filmed. A 20 min drive in the other direction takes you to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avebury</a>, the world’s largest prehistoric circle, where you can walk amongst the vast stones.&nbsp;</p>
