<p>Alex Hopkins stepped into the hot seat at St Margaret’s Prep in September 2024, after four years as Deputy Head Academic. Here he opens up about everything from his love of travel to how he lets off steam after a busy day. </p>

<p>St Margaret’s Prep is a welcoming, nurturing school where curiosity, creativity, and character thrive. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-would-you-like-to-star-as-you-in-the-movie-of-your-life"><strong>Who would you like to star as you in the movie of your life?</strong></h2>



<p>If I could choose anyone to play me in a movie, it would be Colin Firth. He brings a blend of warmth, humour, and sincerity to his roles, which I think would capture the spirit of a school Head quite well! His ability to portray a thoughtful, steady presence with a dash of British wit would hopefully reflect the balanced approach I strive for as an educator. Plus, his portrayals are often understated but impactful &#8211; qualities that I believe resonate well in a leadership role where guiding and supporting others takes priority.</p>

<p>With a £1m donation, I’d focus on three major areas. First, I’d enhance our STEM facilities by building a new science lab and creating a state-of-the-art maker space to encourage hands-on, creative learning. Next, I’d upgrade our outdoor learning spaces, adding sensory gardens, nature trails, and outdoor classrooms to deepen pupils&#8217; connection to the environment and support experiential learning across subjects. Finally, I’d establish a scholarship fund to support more families in joining our school community. By expanding access, fostering innovation, and creating inspiring spaces, we’d strengthen our ability to offer an outstanding, well-rounded education for all pupils.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-describe-what-s-on-your-work-desk-and-what-s-in-the-top-drawer"><strong>Describe what’s on your work desk, and what’s in the top drawer</strong>&#8230;</h2>



<p>On my desk, you’ll find a few essentials: my laptop, a daily planner filled with reminders and to-do lists, and a coffee mug that’s never too far from reach! In the top drawer, there’s an assortment of pens, sticky notes, paperclips, and—most importantly—a secret stash of chocolate for that mid-afternoon pick-me-up! I also always keep a notebook handy for jotting down ideas or notes from meetings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tell-us-about-your-own-childhood-school-days"><strong>Tell us about your own childhood school days&#8230;</strong></h2>

<p>As a child, I was a bit of a mix—I was curious and chatty, so there was the occasional note about &#8220;distracting others,&#8221; but overall, I loved school and feel very lucky to have had such a positive experience. I was especially drawn to reading and history, where I could let my imagination run wild and dive deep into fascinating stories and ideas. While I wasn’t a boarder, after school I’d often spend time outside with friends or lose myself in a good book. I also enjoyed creative subjects like art, which gave me the chance to express myself. Looking back, I had a nice balance of focus and fun, forming lasting friendships and building a lifelong love of learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-was-the-common-theme-of-your-school-reports"><strong>What was the common theme of your school reports?</strong></h2>



<p>Most of my school reports praised my curiosity and enthusiasm but sometimes came with a reminder to “listen more” or “stay on task.” I was always keen to ask questions and sometimes let my excitement for discussion get the better of me, which could be a little distracting in class. There were also a few notes about my tendency to talk to friends during work time! My teachers appreciated my love of learning but often had to remind me to focus, which taught me the value of balancing enthusiasm with attention to detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-were-your-favourite-or-worst-teachers-at-school-and-why"><strong>Who were your favourite or worst teachers at school and why?</strong></h2>



<p>My favourite teacher was Mr. Dawson, who taught English. He made the subject come alive by sharing stories and encouraging us to study books from a variety of genres, which sparked my curiosity and made me look forward to his class. He also encouraged open discussion, which made every lesson feel fresh and engaging. On the other hand, my least favourite was my physics teacher. He was very strict and had little patience for questions, which made me hesitant to ask for help when I struggled. His approach taught me the importance of creating a safe environment for pupils to explore and learnm without fear of judgment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-and-worst-subject-at-school"><strong>Best and worst subject at school?</strong></h2>



<p>My best subject was English; I loved reading, writing, and the opportunity to express my ideas. It allowed me to think creatively and engage with a variety of perspectives, which I found fascinating. My worst subject, by far, was physics. I just couldn’t seem to connect with the concepts, no matter how hard I tried. It always felt a bit too abstract, and I struggled to make sense of formulas and equations. Physics taught me the importance of perseverance, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t breathe a sigh of relief when I dropped the subject after GCSEs!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-if-you-weren-t-a-head-what-would-you-be"><strong>If you weren’t a Head, what would you be?</strong></h2>

<p>If I weren’t a Head, I would have liked to become a vet. I’ve always had a strong love for animals and an interest in biology, so working as a vet would have combined both passions. Growing up, I was the one who eagerly volunteered to take care of any family pet, and I was fascinated by the idea of helping animals heal and thrive. However, the compassion, problem-solving, and resilience required to be a vet align closely with what I value in my current role as an educator. Just as I’m dedicated to guiding children and helping them grow, I think I would find great purpose in caring for animals and supporting their well-being. Although I chose a different path, I still carry that nurturing spirit into my work every day—and my black Labrador Oti loves coming into school with me!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-did-you-go-to-uni-tell-us-your-highs-and-lows-of-student-life"><strong>Where did you go to uni? Tell us your highs and lows of student life?</strong></h2>



<p>I studied Cultural and Media Studies at the University of the West of England, where I was fascinated by how media shapes society and influences perspectives. My time there helped me understand the power of storytelling and communication, skills I now use daily in education. After graduating, I decided to pursue a career in teaching, so I completed my PGCE in Early Years Education, which was incredibly rewarding and equipped me with foundational skills for working with young children. Later, I deepened my focus by earning a Master’s in Special Educational Needs at Bath Spa University. This experience broadened my understanding of diverse learning needs and the importance of inclusivity in education. Altogether, this journey has shaped my philosophy as an educator, allowing me to build a nurturing, responsive learning environment where every child feels seen and supported—an approach I carry into my role as Head.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tell-us-about-your-favourite-books"><strong>Tell us about your favourite books&#8230;</strong></h2>



<p>Growing up, my favourite book was <em>The Hobbit</em> by J.R.R. Tolkien. The sense of adventure, bravery, and Bilbo’s unexpected heroism captivated me, and I loved the idea of an ordinary character doing extraordinary things. At University, I found myself drawn to <em>1984</em> by George Orwell. Its exploration of power, control, and individual freedom left a lasting impact on me, sparking a fascination with literature that challenges society and questions authority. These days, I find myself drawn to autobiographies that offer insights into different fields and mindsets. <em>Educated</em> by Tara Westover is a recent favourite; her journey from a survivalist family to academia is both inspiring and eye-opening. Autobiographies have this special way of immersing you in someone else’s life story, reminding us of our shared challenges and triumphs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-best-school-trip-you-ve-ever-been-on"><strong>What’s the best school trip you’ve ever been on?</strong></h2>

<p>It was a Spanish exchange trip to Santander. I was around 15 and spent two weeks living with a host family, fully immersed in Spanish culture. It was both exciting and challenging, as I had to rely on my Spanish skills daily, from ordering food to joining in family conversations. My host family was incredibly warm and patient, which helped me grow more confident in speaking. Beyond language, we explored the beautiful coastal city, with its historic sites, beaches, and vibrant markets. The experience sparked a lifelong love for travel, and it taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone—a lesson I still carry with me today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-play-book-and-film-should-be-on-every-child-s-cultural-bucket-list"><strong>What play, book, and film should be on every child’s cultural bucket list?</strong></h2>



<p>Every child should experience a live performance of <em>A Midsummer Night’s Dream</em>—the magic, humour, and creativity make it accessible and engaging. For a book, <em>Charlotte’s Web</em> is a must-read; it teaches important lessons about friendship, empathy, and loss. As for a film, <em>The Lion King</em> offers timeless messages of responsibility and courage, all wrapped up in a visually stunning and moving story. Together, these works introduce young people to storytelling that’s impactful, thought-provoking, and rich in lessons about life and character.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-if-you-want-to-hide-from-the-kids-and-staff-for-half-an-hour-where-do-you-go"><strong>If you want to hide from the kids and staff for half an hour, where do you go?</strong></h2>

<p>If I need a moment to recharge, my favourite escape is taking a walk around the school grounds with Oti. There&#8217;s something incredibly calming about being outside in the fresh air, especially with my loyal companion trotting beside me. Our grounds are lovely, with plenty of green spaces and quiet corners that help me clear my head. Oti has a way of making every stroll feel relaxed and joyful, which is just what I need on a busy day. It’s the perfect break—a chance to step away, reset, and return ready to tackle whatever comes next.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-song-you-sing-at-full-volume-when-everyone-s-gone-home"><strong>The song you sing at full volume when everyone’s gone home?</strong></h2>



<p>It has to be <em>Mr. Brightside</em> by The Killers. There’s something about that iconic opening riff and the infectious energy of the lyrics that makes it perfect for an end-of-day pick-me-up. It’s one of those songs that everyone seems to know, and belting it out feels like letting off steam after a busy day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advice-you-d-give-your-younger-self-and-your-current-pupils"><strong>Advice you’d give your younger self – and your current pupils?</strong></h2>



<p>To my younger self, I’d say, ‘Don’t worry so much about having everything planned out. Life will take you on unexpected journeys, and each twist has something valuable to teach you.’ For my pupils, my advice is to stay curious, be kind, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learning is a journey, and every step—successful or not—is part of growing. Embrace challenges, ask questions, and remember that who you become is as important as what you achieve.</p>
