Cheddar Gorge & Caves

Muddy says: Cheddar Gorge-ous more like, with wildlife and views up on the cliff top; awesome rock formations and evidence of prehistoric humans down in the caves

Somerset’s iconic Cheddar Gorge & Caves are spectacular: craggy limestone peaks, wild flowers, rock climbers – and the views from the top are breathtaking. Yet the beauty is far more than skin deep: beneath the rock’s surface lie two of Britain’s oldest show caves, with incredible stalactites (going down) and stalagmites (going up) as well as evidence of Britain’s earliest inhabitants.

Explore Gough’s Cave, where an audio guide tells the story of the cave from its creation to the discovery of Cheddar Man – at 10,000 years, the oldest complete skeleton ever found in Britain. See prehistoric flint tools and everyday objects in the Museum of Prehistory and learn about Stone Age skills.

Climb 274 steps up Jacob’s Ladder for magnificent views over the watery Somerset Levels and continue out onto the Cliff-Top Walk. Or take a cinematic journey through the gorge: Beyond the View tells how the gorge has developed over the years.

Want to add additional extras to your adventurous day?  Try rock climbing, caving or have a go at Escape Room games.

An international centre for caving and rock climbing, with over 1,000 routes for experienced climbers, complete beginners can have a go too. Or you could turn on your head torch and go deep into the heart of the caves and back across the Bottomless Pit (gulp). All under the guidance of experienced instructors.

If you’re up to the challenge, put yourself to the test and see if you can find your way out of the two Cheddar Escape Rooms: a high security vault or underground cave.

Don’t miss the hands-on Festival of Archaeology Weds 25 July – Sun 2 Sept; the Halloween Spooktacular Sat 27 Oct – Sat 4 Nov; and Father Christmas from Sat 24 Nov.
