Dreamy countryside, chocolate-box villages and more honey-hued cottages than you can shake a camera at – it’s no wonder Wiltshire is a darling of the film and TV world. The county&#8217;s pretty towns and impressive ancient buildings have appeared in everything from Rivals to Poldark, Thor, Downton Abbey and Harry Potter. Here’s where you can visit the county’s top film and TV locations.

Stonehenge is Wiltshire’s most famous landmark – and it’s no stranger to the spotlight. The ancient, mysterious stone circle has dazzled on the big screen in everything from Thor: The Dark World and Transformers: The Last Knight to Tess of the D’Urbervilles, starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-tithe-barn-bradford-on-avon">The Tithe Barn, Bradford on Avon</h2>

Even if you haven’t visited Bradford on Avon’s stunning tithe barn, the chances are you’ve spotted it on TV. Both the inside and exterior were used for Wolf Hall, starring Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance and Golden Globe winner Damien Lewis. More recently the exterior was used for Netflix series Cursed. Back in 2016, it also played host to Tudor drama The White Princess, adapted from Philippa Gregory’s historical novel.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-castle-combe">Castle Combe</h2>

With its babbling brook and 15th century weavers’ cottages, Castle Combe consistently scoops awards for being the ‘Prettiest Village in England.’ It’s also a hotspot for TV and Hollywood film shoots – you’ll see its winding streets and Market Cross pop up in blockbusters including War Horse and Wolfman. It also represented the fictional village of Wall in Stardust, starring Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer.

<a href="https://www.wiltonhouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wilton House</a> has starred in tons of period dramas over the years, including Emma, The Crown and Pride and Prejudice. More recently, it appeared in Bridgerton, when it was used as the homes of the Duke of Hastings, Lady Danbury, Queen Charlotte and the Duke and Duchess of Hastings. Phew.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-great-chalfield-manor-holt">Great Chalfield Manor, Holt</h2>

Tucked away in the countryside near Holt, the romantic Great Chalfield Manor is pure period drama perfection. Over the years, the house and gardens have graced screens big and small, starring in The Other Boleyn Girl, Tess of the d&#8217;Urbervilles, and Wolf Hall, where it doubled as Austin Friars, the home of Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance). If you’re a fan of Poldark, you’ll also recognise it as Killewarren, the home of Dr Enys. Fancy a visit? This one is a <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/great-chalfield-manor-and-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Trust </a>property.

Wander through the chocolate-box village of Lacock and you’ll spot scenes straight from your screen. The famous abbey features in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, (you can even see the real cauldron, which is used in Professor Quirrell’s classroom) while the village itself appears in Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice and Cranford. The village’s actual bakery was used as the bakery in Cranford, while Church street was transformed into a livestock show for Downton Abbey. Sheep, pigs and even a longhorn bull joined Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and his family.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stourhead-stourton">Stourhead, Stourton</h2>

With its stunning gardens and lake, it’s no wonder location scouts swoon over Stourhead. Does the Palladian bridge look familiar? You might remember Elizabeth (Keira Knightly) running across it in the pouring rain, in Pride and Prejudice. More recently, the house itself took centre stage when it appeared in BBC drama The Pursuit of Love, starring Lily James and Andrew Scott. The Column Room featured as the Parisian bedroom of Linda (Lily James), while Andrew Scott was spotted eating multiple chocolate eclairs while filming in the Italian room. Luckily the estate is a <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/stourhead" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Trust</a> property, so you can see it for yourself. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-corsham">Corsham</h2>

Wiltshire may be landlocked, but Corsham nevertheless featured as coastal Truro in Poldark. The town’s road was covered in dirt, while geese and horse drawn carts took up residence. More recently, it’s been used as the backdrop for Disney+ hit series Rivals. Actors Alex Hassell (Rupert Campbell Black), David Tennant (Tony Baddingham) and Hubert Burton (Gerald Middleton) were all spotted out and about, and the town hall was transformed into a polling centre. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neston-park-estate-atworth">Neston Park Estate, Atworth</h2>

Privately owned Neston Park Estate is another Wiltshire megastar, frequently used as a film and TV location. Recently, it made for a BAFTA worthy backdrop in Towards Zero, the latest Agatha Christie adaptation to hit our screens. The house also plays a starring role in Rivals, featuring as The Falconry, the grand house belonging to TV mogul Tony Baddingham (David Tennant).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-old-wardour-castle-tisbury">Old Wardour Castle, Tisbury</h2>

Remember the Kevin Costner blockbuster, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? Old Wardour Castle stood in for the Locksley family seat, although it was partially rebuilt for its starring role using giant fake stone blocks. Robin’s father Lord Locksley (Brian Blessed) met his untimely end at the castle. He was filmed emerging from the drawbridge, only to be attacked by a crowd of evil druids, carrying burning torches.

With its postcard-perfect duck pond and 18th-century houses, Biddestone is a magnet for film and TV crews – and the odd celeb spotting. The village featured in Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death with Mathew Horne, Ashley Jensen and Hermione Norris (who was spotted strolling between takes). Hollywood also came calling when the village was used in movie The Christmas Candle, starring Les Misérables John Hannah and former Sylvester McCoy.
