<p>Snowdrops are one of winter’s small wins, and Wiltshire does them rather well. If you’re after a decent excuse for a walk and a bit of seasonal smugness, here are some of our favourite places to catch the carpets of white.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stourhead-stourton"><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/stourhead" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stourhead</a>, Stourton </h2>



<p>Stourhead is fabulous throughout the seasons, but it’s deliciously calm and quiet come winter. Better still, it&#8217;s one of the loveliest spots to soak up snowdrops in Wiltshire. You&#8217;ll find them carpeting many of the garden borders, adding pretty sprinklings of white as you meander round the lake. &nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lacock-abbey-lacock"><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock-abbey-" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lacock Abbey</a>, Lacock</h2>



<p>It may be famous for <em>Harry Potter</em>, but Lacock makes a great place to seek out snowdrops. The area around the abbey is carpeted in the pretty blooms from Feb, making an already beautiful area that bit more magical. Afterwards, head to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lacockshop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lacock Shop and Deli</a>, which does great takeaway coffee and salads. Prefer to eat in? Head just up the hill to <a href="https://risingsunlacock.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Rising Sun</a>, where you&#8217;ll find a cracking roast. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heale-garden-middle-woodford"><a href="https://www.healegarden.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Heale Garden</strong></a><strong>, Middle Woodford</strong></h2>



<p>This riverside garden near Salisbury is pretty spesh. Think bubbling streams, exuberant planting and meadows packed with spring bulbs. It doesn&#8217;t open until 11th March, but if you&#8217;re lucky you&#8217;ll still find sheets of aconites and snowdrops carpeting the ground, and maybe the odd peacock too. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-great-chalfield-manor-holt"><a href="https://www.dorothyhouse.org.uk/get-involved/events/snowdrops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Chalfield Manor</a>, Holt</h2>



<p>This 15th Century stunner opens its gates on 15th Feb for its annual <a href="https://www.dorothyhouse.org.uk/get-involved/events/snowdrops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">snowdrop day</a>. Head there for a chance to take a peek around the oh-so-pretty gardens, and raise cash for Dorothy House in the process. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lydiard-park-swindon"><a href="https://www.lydiardpark.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lydiard Park</a>, Swindon</h2>



<p>Just outside Swindon, but somehow gloriously remote, Lydiard Park is the ideal place to gawp at snowdrops. People travel miles to see the little white wonders, cloaking the woods and grounds around the lake. Entry is free, you’ll just need to pay for parking. Better still, there are <a href="https://www.lydiardpark.org.uk/visit/park-facilities/cafe-and-tea-rooms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two cafes</a> on site.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-westcroft-garden-boscombe-village-salisbury"><a href="https://www.westcroftgarden.co.uk/snowdrops" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Westcroft Garden</a>, Boscombe Village, Salisbury </h2>



<p>This cottage garden is home to a whopping 400 varieties of snowdrop, and owner Lyn Miles – a self-confessed ‘snowdrop nut’ – throws open her gates on selected days over the next few weeks. Alongside the carpets of white you’ll find homemade cakes, biscuits and hot drinks, plus bulbs to buy. Entry is just £4, opening days are: Every Thursday until March 12th, plus Sunday 15th, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd Feb.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-savernake-forest-marlborough"><a href="https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods/woods/savernake/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Savernake Forest</a>, Marlborough</h2>



<p>The Marlborough area is famous for bluebells (head there mid-May for a staggering blaze of blue), but you can find plenty of snowdrops earlier in the year. Pack a flask of hot chocolate and let the kids run wild in the forest, while you hone your snowdrop spotting skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-courts-gardens-holt"><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/the-courts-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Courts Gardens</a>, Holt</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/the-courts-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Courts Gardens</a> has reopens on 1st March, and it’s well worth a visit. You&#8217;ll find pretty pockets of white snowdrops, as well as ponds and an arboretum to explore. This is a great one for the kids, thanks to the fab mud kitchen and forest school area. When you need to refuel, pop over the road to Wild Herb Cafe, at Glove Factory Studios. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-erlestoke-park-wood-erlestoke"><a href="https://getoutside.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/local/erlestoke-park-wood-wiltshire" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Erlestoke Park Wood</a>, Erlestoke</h2>



<p>Tucked between Bratton and Market Lavington, this pretty woodland packs a punch. With a lake and trails to explore, it’s heaven for the kids and you’ll find plenty of snowdrops nestled under the trees. Park at Holy Saviour’s Church and pop over the road to find the path. Afterwards, head to nearby Edington, where you’ll find fab food at <a href="https://www.threedaggers.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Three Daggers</a> pub and farm shop.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lawns-swindon"><a href="https://www.visitswindon.org.uk/business/76.aspx?b=The+Lawns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Lawns</a>, Swindon</h2>



<p>This 50-acre patch of parkland might be slap bang in Swindon, but you’ll feel like you’re in the countryside. Once part of a family estate, it now plays host to fabulous walks and summer events, plus you’ll find patches of snowdrops in the wooded areas (check out the footpath down to Highclere Avenue).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shaftesbury-snowdrop-festival-14-22-february"><a href="https://www.shaftesburysnowdrops.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shaftesbury snowdrop festival</a>, 14-22 February</h2>



<p>A couple of miles over the Dorset border, you’ll find a snowdrop extravaganza. Shaftesbury Snowdrop Festival has everything from guided walks to expert talks, craft activities and even a themed lantern parade, which leads to gorgeous Gold Hill. This is a great one for the family, you can find out more <a href="https://www.shaftesburysnowdrops.org/event-list" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-badbury-near-swindon"><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/badbury" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Badbury</a>, near Swindon</h2>



<p>While this spot is famed for its bluebells (it even has a dedicated platform for photo opps), Badbury is worth a quick visit if you&#8217;re passing by. You can pick short walks or longer routes, and there&#8217;s an Iron Age fort if you&#8217;ve got any history fans in your midst. Plus, because it&#8217;s so high up, the views stretch for miles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-afield">FURTHER AFIELD&#8230;</h2>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cerney-gardens-cirencester"><a href="https://www.cerneygardens.com/copy-of-opening-times" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cerney Gardens</a>, Cirencester</h2>



<p>Just over the border near Cirencester sits Cerney House, a beautiful stately home with impressive gardens. Follow the Woodland Walk for a glorious display of dainty blooms. The gardens are open seven days a week (tickets £1 for children, £6 for adults) and it’s worth keeping an eye on the <a href="https://www.cerneygardens.com/events?fbclid=IwAR3_1R5h4R9Dmlc6kABcb7Ka2o7Sp-9mhCS46ic_xvkjO4dOwSSPyb-MkdY" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">website</a> for snowdrop updates. Furry friends are welcome too, but must be kept on leads.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-welford-park-newbury-berkshire"><a href="https://www.welfordpark.co.uk/event/snowdrops-at-welford-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Welford Park</a>, Newbury, Berkshire</h2>



<p>It may be in Berkshire, but it would be remiss not to mention Welford Park, home to one of the UK’s most dazzling snowdrop displays. It’s also where <em>The Great British Bake Off </em>sets up camp every year, in its famous white tent. Admire the snowdrops as you wander through the gardens and along the river Lambourne, then defrost with a cake and coffee in the Snowdrop Marquee. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colesbourne-near-cheltenham"><a href="https://www.colesbournegardens.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colesbourne</a>, near Cheltenham</h2>



<p>Colesbourne in the Cotswolds has been dubbed ‘England’s greatest snowdrop garden,’ which is a pretty impressive accolade. Thousands of snowdrops are planted out each year, and the grounds are carpeted in the collection, which includes some 350 cultivars. Colesbourne is open on weekends until 1st March, but you&#8217;ll need to buy<a href="https://www.colesbournegardens.org.uk/snowdrop-open-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> tickets</a> in advance online. </p>
