If you’re after a fresh-air fix with a side of fun (and food), Basset Down ticks a ton of boxes. Set in a stunning spot near Swindon, with sweeping views the Wiltshire Downs, this family-run spot blends golf, footgolf, discgolf, games and a restaurant into one crowd-pleaser of a day out.

Golf is the focus here, but not always in the traditional sense. Basset Down has quickly made a name for itself by doing things a bit differently, with plenty of options that don’t require a perfect swing. Seasoned players can tackle the 9-hole course, which makes the most of the North Wessex Downs’ natural contours, while everyone else can get stuck into something a little more playful.

There’s Wiltshire’s largest 18-hole footgolf course, plus a brilliantly imaginative 9-hole “crazy” version, inspired by local landmarks including Stonehenge, the White Horses and Silbury Hill. Expect lots of obstacles to kick through and around, plenty of laughs and just enough challenge to keep everyone on their toes. Both courses can also be played as disc golf if you fancy mixing things up.

If you’d rather hone your golf skills, the 20-bay, undercover driving range is kitted out with Toptracer tech. To the uninitiated, this means you can track your shots on the touchscreen monitors, leaning into ball flight data like distance, speed and height. It doesn’t have to be serious though – there are family friendly games on there too, including interactive Angry Birds and GoFish. You can also tuck into a drink (or snack) at your bay, plus there’s free club hire for kids.

And then there’s the restaurant, which is reason enough to visit in its own right. With panoramic views across the downs, this is a lovely spot for a relaxed breakfast, lunch or dinner, as well as a leisurely Sunday roast or afternoon tea. On a sunny day, the balcony is hard to beat, especially with an Aperol in hand.
