Cricklade Hotel & Spa, Cricklade

Dreamy terrace views, disc golf, pétanque and a spa to sneak off to – this laid-back hotel makes a great base for exploring the Cotswolds

Tucked away just outside the Saxon town of Cricklade, this relaxed hideaway mixes period charm with easy modern style. Privately owned (despite its Best Western badge), it has a friendly, welcoming vibe and sweeping Wiltshire views.

The terrace is the star here, with its pretty pastel parasols, a woodfired pizza oven and far-reaching countryside views – the perfect spot for sundowners as cows graze below. The vast grounds are a play park too, with an 18-hole foot and disc golf course, pétanque courts and tennis. Phew.

A  country retreat isn’t complete without a spot of R&R. At the boutique Fritillary Spa, you’ll find a pool, sauna and excellent Templespa treatments, given by top notch therapists. One dreamy Drift Away massage please…

Rooms are light and spacious, with super-comfy beds, and families will love the outdoor space. Two under-12s also stay free with a paying adult, plus pooches are welcome too – just add £15 and bring the biscuits.

The food? Think zingy starters, perfectly cooked steak and indulgent desserts, plus a breakfast spread that champions local produce – from free-range eggs to Cirencester coffee.

Step beyond the hotel for wild swimming, paddle boarding or sailing at the stunning Cotswold Lakes, enjoy a stomp along the nearby Thames or take a mooch around the shops in Roman Cirencester.
