At the heart of postcard-pretty Castle Combe sits The Castle Inn, a 12th-century pub that feels like it’s been plucked straight from a film set (which, incidentally, it often is). Part of the Exclusive Collection, it has a rather glamorous sister just down the road in The Manor House – but don’t be fooled, this place more than holds its own, with 2 AA Rosettes and a coveted spot in the Estrella Damm Top 100 Gastropubs list.
Inside, it’s all cosy corners and character – think beams, open fires, leather banquettes and a few playful nods to nearby Castle Combe Circuit. Step outside and you’re straight into one of the prettiest villages in the country, with stone cottages, a winding stream and the famous bridge just a short stroll away.
Food is refined gastropub, done exceptionally well. Expect the likes of king prawns in punchy garlic sauce, beautifully cooked ray wing, or a knockout fish and chips. Puddings are worth the stretch – especially the sticky toffee, which arrives with a generous jug of sauce.
Upstairs, the bedrooms lean into the building’s history, with beams, sloping ceilings and buckets of charm, alongside more contemporary options if you prefer something sleeker. Guests can also use facilities at The Manor House, which include a gym, tennis courts and its championship golf course. Planning to make a weekend of it? The ‘Pub and Play’ package includes two rounds of golf and dinner credit.
Dogs are welcome, and with some of Wiltshire’s prettiest walks on the doorstep, you’ll want to bring them.
