The Great Bustard, Great Durnford, Salisbury

Wiltshire’s hot new hangout has it all, from cosy midweek meals to lavish Sunday roasts, luxuriant treatments and 10 stunning rooms

After an ambitious refurb, this 19th Century inn has embarked on an exciting new chapter as The Great Bustard. But this isn’t just a great pub with excellent food – you’ll also find a restaurant, treatment room and 10 fabulous bedrooms. Oh, and a farm shop, stuffed with everything from jams to game and organic body products, all of which hail from the Great Durnford Estate. Now we’re talking!

The pub here is all about cosy vibes and a menu brimming with classics. From the wingback chairs to the roaring fire and flagstone floors, this is a great place to hunker down after a stomp in the pretty Woodford Valley. Depending on the day, you can tuck into anything from wood-fired pizzas to a fillet steak from nearby Springbottom Farm.

With its vast floor-to-ceiling windows, soft banquettes and open kitchen, the restaurant is slick and stylish. Chef Jordan Taylor puts produce centre stage, creating carefully-considered yet unpretentious dishes. Think hot smoked trout with salt baked kohlrabi, rack of lamb and honey glazed monkfish. The local emphasis is strong here, with pigeon breast, lamb and venison all from the Great Durnford Estate. There’s also a private dining room, The Black Grouse, for up to 12 guests, plus a canopied courtyard for sipping rose in the summer (or a hot chocolate in the winter).

Want to make a night of it? You’re in! You’ll find 10 gorgeous bedrooms, with thick woollen curtains, super king beds and organic Durnford toiletries. Two are dog-friendly, so there’s no need to leave Fido at home. You also dial up the relaxation with a session in Osprey treatment room, where you’ll find expertly administered massages, facials and everything in between. Bliss!
