The Neeld Arms, Grittleton, Wiltshire

This Grittleton gem offers great food, stylish rooms and lashings of Cotswold character

You’ll find The Neeld Arms tucked away in the pretty village of Grittleton, just four miles from the M4. From its honey-hued exterior to the warren-like interior, this pooch-friendly pub packs some seriously cosy Cotswold charm. Think timber floors, oodles of fireplaces and beamed ceilings, all bathed in softly flickering candlelight.

Service here is top notch, and the welcome from owners Mark and Mark is second to none. This impressive duo have masterminded an impeccable renovation since taking the helm in 2024, and it’s certainly paid off. Come the evening, the place is totally buzzing with drinkers and diners, eager to delve into a menu that seamlessly combines great pub classics with more elevated dishes. Think everything from Brixham cider and dill battered fish to beef with tender stem and butter mash. Of course, when Sunday rolls around it’s the lavish roasts that are the star of the show. Worked up an appetite beforehand? Why not take on a plate of chicken, beef and pork, piled high with roasties, homemade Yorkies and cauliflower cheese. Yum.

Up for an overnighter? You’ll find six newly-renovated ensuite rooms, meticulously kitted out with thoughtful touches like Nespresso coffee machines, Roberts radios and shower gel from Cotswold-based 100 Acres Perfumery. After a good night’s kip, you’ll meander downstairs to a generous breakfast, majoring on carefully sourced ingredients. Think bacon from Padfield Porkies in Devizes, sausages from Gloucestershire and coffee from Wiltshire’s very own Dusty Ape roastery. That has to be a winner.
