The Rising Sun, Lacock

Seasonal food, a gorgeous garden and one of the best views in Wiltshire – this recently refurbished country pub has all the right ingredients

Just a short stroll up the hill from the National Trust village of Lacock, The Rising Sun is a traditional, stone-built country pub with flagstone floors, a farmhouse kitchen vibe and a sun-drenched garden. There’s a huge decked terrace too, serving up one of the best panoramic views across the Wiltshire countryside – the perfect place to watch the sun sinking over the horizon as you tuck into an Aperol or two.

The menu changes with the seasons and champions local suppliers – from ice creams churned just down the road at Lacock Dairy to indulgent cinnamon buns at the bar. When the sun’s out, the BBQ shed swings into action, serving up stacked burgers and smoky sides, while inside you’ll find hearty classics, modern pub favourites and (come winter) roaring fires. And it’s a freehouse, so expect a cracking line-up of local ales alongside house specials.

This is walking country at its finest, with the pub hosting guided walks on the first Saturday of every month. Better still, if you’re up for a stomp you get a free bacon bap and cuppa to set you up before you hit the trails. Dogs are welcome everywhere (with dog ice cream on the menu for four-legged friends), and walkers, cyclists and families are equally at home.

The events calendar is just as lively, from Caribbean garden parties and live music sessions to cocktail-making classes, quizzes, kids’ craft sessions and festive Christmas markets. Phew!
