The Three Daggers, Edington

A traditional country pub with some seriously cushy extras – namely an excellent seasonal farm shop, luxury holiday cottages with their own spa, and an award-winning micro brewery. Form an orderly queue!

Perched high up on Wiltshire’s rolling chalk downs, this 18th-century inn boasts rave reviews from locals and travellers alike. No wonder, when it’s a four-in-one killer combo of gastropub-with-rooms, brewery, farm shop and luxe self-catering holiday cottages.

Inside The Three Daggers, you’ll find elegant, traditional decor with exposed oak beams, brick walls and a double sided fireplace, ideal for chilly winter days. This is all zhushed up with a slick, gastro air, amplified by the pub’s farm-to-fork approach. Many ingredients are sourced from farmers and growers based in the south west – think Wiltshire honey, Somerset camembert and bread baked onsite. And if you like what you try, the chances are you can snap it up in the excellently-stocked on-site farm shop.

Dishes are innovative and flavourful, with heaps of fresh produce, fish and plenty to please veggies too. Think day boat fish with fondant potato and charred hispi cabbage, confit duck leg with butter bean cassoulet and grilled harissa aubergine with lemon and soy yoghurt. What to wash it all down with? By lucky coincidence, the on-site microbrewery has award-winning beers on tap.

During the summer, take the party outside and head to The Woodshed, a separate al fresco dining area that fills to the brim with locals. The outdoor menu swaps out pub classics for wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, garlic bread and draught beers. There’s also a cracking play area bang next door, making light work of a meal with the kids in tow.

Another string to The Three Daggers’ considerable bow is the events space – The Brewery can hold up to 45 people, ideal for a small wedding reception or birthday bash. If private dining is more your bag, opt for The Wool Barn or Garden Room for a quiet dinner of up to 20 people.

No need to scurry off after your meal, as there are three styles of lovely ensuite rooms – super king size, king size and twin or double beds, plus three separate luxury cottages. For something a bit spesh, Hillside Cottage sleeps 12 and has all the creature comforts. Think sauna, plunge pool and hot tub, alongside some stunning views.

A bolthole isn’t complete without some serious R&R. Just across the road from The Three Daggers, you’ll find The Wellness Barn, which has a fabulous selection of hotel-grade treatments – one Swedish massage, please!
