This chocolate-box village pub in Chilton Foliat has emerged from a top-to-toe makeover looking seriously fabulous. The original bar remains reassuringly pubby, with exposed brickwork, wood-burning stoves and dartboard, but weave your way out the back and you’ll discover a spectacular new oak-framed orangery, complete with an impressive open kitchen, tons of seating and doors leading onto the garden.

Food is a major draw here, and Chef Director Leigh Evans seriously knows his stuff. The kitchen specialises in open-fire and rotisserie cooking, with a menu that ventures far beyond standard pub fare. Think everything from oysters and scallops to Wye Valley asparagus and dry-aged pork chop, cooked over the coals. We loved the monkfish masala, served with garlicky saag aloo, pickled sultanas and an inspired take on an onion bhaji. Sunday roasts are a big deal too, with plans afoot to run Sunday specials offering seriously fine wines by the glass.

There are seven newly renovated boutique bedrooms, combining exposed beams and earthy tones with bold decorative touches. Add in freestanding claw-foot baths, locally crafted oak furniture and divine toiletries, and you’ve got a luxe countryside escape. Breakfast is equally impressive, with creative dishes alongside the classics. Afterwards, burn it all off with gorgeous walks on the doorstep – you’re immersed in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hungerford is also just down the road, and you’re a short hop to Marlborough’s gorgeous indie shops. Furry BFFs are welcome too, with two dog-friendly bedrooms.
