The White Horse, Compton Bassett

Friendly folk, moreish Modern British dishes and restful rooms. This is one pub where you’re going to want to be called a local.

If you’re hankering after modern Wiltshire hospitality in a traditional but stylish setting, with a menu to make you want to move in, save The White Horse in Compton Bassett to your favourites. An impressive white building with rolling countryside views from the garden, this village pub has been serving beer since 1850, although in the 21st Century it serves fine wine, fashionable gins and delicious, award-winning, food too (it holds two AA rosettes).

Ingredients are sourced from the South West and the chefs produce melt-in-the-mouth Modern British dishes, like Grass Fed Rib-Eye Steak with Chips with Marmite Hollandaise, or Beefburger with Beer Cheese Sauce and Bacon Jam – there’s always a little twist. In the Summer you can soak up the sun outside in the large garden at the back, in Winter, snuggle up by the wood burner in the bar – and if you want to feast with friends or colleagues, book the private dining room which seats up to 24. You can even stay over in one of the seven, AA four star gold-winning rooms, which luckily are in a separate building from the main pub with views of the paddock, meaning you can get a peaceful lie-in with that hangover (unless you have kids in tow) plus breakfast. Dogs are very welcome too.

For days out, head to Cherhill White Horse (after which the pub takes its name), Avebury, Bath, Marlborough – there’s an informative list on their website here. But once you’re there, we’re betting that you won’t want to leave.
