<p>Former Muddy Award winner for <em>Best Boutique Stay</em>, Overtown Manor is the kind of country bolthole that does it all. Tucked on the edge of the North Wessex Downs, this elegant 17th-century farmhouse offers elegant B&amp;B rooms, relaxed cookery classes, restorative retreats and polished corporate away days. You can also book for a group, and rent the entire house as a holiday home. </p>



<p>Overtown Manor sits just seven miles from the M4, making it super easy to reach, with Marlborough only a short drive away and Avebury’s magical stone circle 15 minutes down the road. If the manor looks familiar, that’s because it recently appeared on Channel 4’s <em>Four in a Bed</em>, when owner Nancy impressed TV guests with her effortless B&amp;B hosting and seriously good food. She&#8217;s a total pro when it comes to warm, down-to-earth hospitality, not to mention an awesome cook.</p>

<p>The approach sets the tone: a sweeping, tree-lined drive leads you towards paddocks with horses grazing, and a handsome manor house backed by lush green lawns. There&#8217;s also a fabulous kitchen garden, which supplies the table. </p>



<p>Nancy and her family are the fourth generation to live at Overtown, and that sense of family hums through every corner. Inside, heritage bones meet modern comfort. Think elegant reception rooms with big sash windows, open fires and plenty of squashy seating. It’s all incredibly homely rather than hotel-like, and designed to make you exhale the moment you step through the door. The two canine residents are an added bonus: Frank, the friendly Jack Russell and Willow, super-chilled lurcher whose favourite spot is to be stretched out in front of the giant Aga.</p>

<p>Bedrooms are ensuite, beautifully put together and quietly elegant, while the heated pool is ready for summer swims &#8211; or, if you’re feeling hardy, autumn cold dips in September and October. Whole-house hire also gives you access to a basement games room with table tennis, pool and darts, plus tons of indoor and outdoor space to spread out. It’s an ideal space for families, groups of friends or corporate groups. The garden is also dreamy, with plenty of spots for a quiet coffee on a crisp morning or a glass of wine in the evening. </p>



<p>Overtown Manor&#8217;s vast dining room can be cleverly flipped into a smart meeting space for corporate events, and the drawing room, with its roaring fire, sumptuous Pompomery fabrics and garden views, is a hit for more relaxed away days. Nancy also runs regular cookery classes in her fabulous kitchen, covering everything from Christmas entertaining to midweek suppers and canapé-making (more on this below). If you’re in need of a recharge, you’ll find seasonal wellness events in the calendar too &#8211; think yoga sessions and gentle detox retreats.</p>

<p>Food is at the beating heart of Overtown Manor. Nancy is a trained chef with 30 years’ experience, and her love of cooking is threaded through the entire experience. Rightly so, for her skills (honed under the watchful eye of chefs including James Martin) are pretty impressive.</p>



<p>Unlike most B&amp;Bs, she offers guests the option to pre-book dinner &#8211; something we’d strongly recommend. Expect hearty, seasonal dishes such as mushroom risotto, slow-cooked casseroles and indulgent crumbles, often created using ingredients from Overtown’s ginormous veggie garden, which produces everything from asparagus to chard, kale, beetroot and carrots. Do ask to have a peek at the plot while you’re there, it’s incredible. In fact, there are edibles everywhere you look, for the orchard is brimming with pears, quince and apples, and Nancy’s hens are busy producing eggs.</p>



<p>Breakfast is delicious, with ingredients all locally sourced. Guests are treated to homemade granola, freshly baked sourdough, jams, local kefir, and apple juice from Overtown Manor’s apple trees. Of course, there’s a full cooked breakfast too. My pick &#8211; creamy scrambled eggs, paired with thick-cut crispy bacon from Marlborough’s Sumbler Bros butcher – more than set me up for the day.</p>

<p>The kitchen itself is the stuff of dreams, with a vast Aga, enormous island and a long table that instantly invites you to pull up a chair. Nancy puts the space to full use with regular cookery courses and demonstrations, and they are a hard recommend from us. Guests cluster on chairs around the island and enjoy a glass of wine or two, while she showcases a series of delicious, unfussy dishes. She shares ingenious tricks of the trade as she goes and, best of all, you get to tuck into her creations. It&#8217;s incredibly relaxing but do come hungry, it’s also quite a feast. &nbsp;</p>



<p>I joined a demo of easy autumn meals evenings and came away armed with an impressive repertoire: a silky mushroom risotto, baked pear and almond cake, apple tarte tatin, chickpea and kale curry, roast tomato soup and an incredible gluten-free bread (deliciously dangerous once slathered in butter). Along the way, I picked up tons of handy tips, including how to rescue a split sauce, elevate a risotto from simple to showstopper, speed up my kitchen prep and stretch dishes further without sacrificing flavour. It’s clever, generous cooking, and I&#8217;ve since recreated all the dishes at home. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk">PILLOW TALK </h2>

<p>Overtown Manor’s six bedrooms are designed to feel like home &#8211; only much nicer. Five are ensuite, and the sixth has its own private bathroom. Interiors are classically elegant without feeling fussy: neutral walls, thick draping curtains, chandeliers, soft lighting from oversized lamps and gorgeous sash windows that flood the rooms with natural light. </p>



<p>Each room has been thoughtfully finished with antique furniture finds, like leather-topped desks and wardrobes. Barbury Down even has a beautiful four-poster if you’re in the mood to live out your period-drama fantasies, plus you can waft around in a soft white bathrobe. Freshly cut dahlias from the garden added a seasonal touch, while Bramley toiletries are in perfect keeping with the luxe, local vibe. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it the kind of place where you can truly unwind.</p>

<p>One of Overtown’s biggest draws is its location. You’re just 15 minutes away from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/wiltshire/avebury" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avebury</a>, home to one of the most extraordinary ancient stone circles in the world. A wander here is a must, and it&#8217;s easy to make a day of it if you include the nearby museum and Avebury Manor. This National Trust stunner suffered a catastrophic flood in 2024 but should be reopening in time for Christmas 2025, and is well worth a visit.  </p>



<p>Walkers are spoiled at Overtown Manor. The famous Ridgeway Trail passes close by, and Barbury Castle &#8211; an Iron Age hill fort &nbsp;&#8211; makes the perfect starting point for a stunning four or five mile walk along the downs to Ogbourne St Andrew. There you’ll find The Silks, an excellent pub run by <em>MasterChef</em> champion Thomas Frake. If the food and local ales defeat your walking resolve, a cab back is an easy option.</p>



<p>For retail therapy, Swindon Designer Outlet is just down the road, offering discounts on brands like Russell &amp; Bromley, Jigsaw and Jo Malone. Marlborough’s high street is also lined with brilliant independents, while Bath, Bradford-on-Avon and the Cotswolds are all easy day trips. The pretty medieval market town of Devizes is another highlight, home to the famous Caen Hill Locks -16 neatly staggered locks in an impressive feat of engineering.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>Overtown Manor is Grade II listed and dates back to the 17<sup>th</sup> Century, which makes adaptations tricky. Rooms are accessed by stairs and steps, so we&#8217;d recommend discussing any requirements with Nancy before booking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Families or groups of friends looking for whole-house getaway in beautiful countryside, couples, worker bees and solo travellers in search of an elegant but relaxed B&amp;B. Nancy’s cooking demos are perfect for keen or wannabe cooks who want to be inspired in a relaxed and homely setting. This is also a brilliant spot for corporate away days, where comfort and good food are top of the agenda.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Anyone after nightlife on the doorstep &#8211; this is a country escape with all the trimmings, not a party pad.</p>
