<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



Chances are you’ve seen, walked beside or even boated along the Kennet and Avon Canal, but have you ever stopped to question why it doesn’t ever run dry? Hidden deep in the Wiltshire countryside at Crofton Beam Engines are two vast steam-powered machines, which once kept it topped up. On special steaming days, they still roar into life, and watching them is quite a spectacle. It&#8217;s also a fun day out for families, especially if you&#8217;ve got curious kids.



Wondering what exactly a beam engine is? You’re not alone. Essentially, without these mighty machines, the Kennet and Avon Canal would quickly have become impassable. Using the power of steam, the two enormous engines pump water from deep underground &#8211; 40 feet to be precise &#8211; which then flows along a specially constructed channel, called the leat. It then tops up the canal at its highest point, allowing boats to pass through.

These days, a modern electric pump does the hard graft, but every year the original engines fire back into action on designated days. They may be around 200 years old, but they’ve even been called upon in emergencies when the modern pump has faltered, which feels suitably dramatic for such an incredible feat of engineering.



These historic engines don’t run every day, which makes a visit feel all the more special. You can see them back in business on 14 steaming days each year, usually on bank holidays and selected weekends, when the whole place springs into life. It’s well worth planning ahead, because seeing them in action is a pretty awe-inspiring experience.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

Reaching Crofton Beam Engines feels a bit like discovering a secret. After winding along pretty, peaceful country lanes, we suddenly emerged into a beautiful open space, perched above the Kennet and Avon Canal and Wilton Water, a vast reservoir, glinting in the sunshine. It&#8217;s a stunner of a spot, especially when the weather&#8217;s on your side. 



The Boiler Room and Engine House sit side by side in two impressive Georgian buildings, but my kids were also fascinated by the towering brick chimney. Standing near the entrance like a sentry, it stretches a whopping 82ft into the sky. Rumour even has it that long ago, the Lord who owned the local estate insisted that if anyone created black smoke when they fired up the boiler, they&#8217;d be sacked immediately.

Crofton Beam Engines may be steeped in industrial heritage, but it feels lively and fun rather than formal. On our visit, families were everywhere &#8211; dogs trotting across the grass, children darting about and parents enjoying a natter and a coffee in the sunshine.



What really struck me was how welcoming it felt at ever turn, and that’s largely thanks to the team behind it. Crofton is run by around 50 volunteers, all hugely passionate about keeping these extraordinary machines alive. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and they’re always happy to answer questions or share fascinating snippets of history, which makes the whole experience feel personal and hands-on, rather than museum-like.



It&#8217;s worth knowing that Crofton is also clearly a popular starting point for countryside walks. The onsite tearoom, The Old Smithy, is a draw too, serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes, with picnic tables overlooking the canal and reservoir.

We weren’t entirely sure what to expect when we ventured inside, but within minutes we were completely hooked. The real drama happens inside the Boiler House, where engineers shovel coal into the vast boiler that powers the engines. My kids were instantly captivated by the flames roaring inside the boiler, and said it felt a bit like watching a steam train, only on a much bigger scale.

The roaring fire and the clang of metal gave the whole place a real sense of theatre, as did the beam engines themselves. We climbed upstairs in the Engine Room to watch them in action, and they are enormous. Watching them swing steadily up and down is pretty spectacular, and there’s something strangely hypnotic about their steady, powerful rhythm. Each stroke lifts a ton of water, raising it 40 feet, and it’s genuinely awe-inspiring to think they&#8217;ve been in action for two centuries.

Beyond admiring the machinery, there’s plenty here to keep families entertained. After exploring the Engine Room, we each chose ducks for the duck race down the leat. It was an instant hit and equal parts chaos and competition, with plenty of shouting from the sidelines. Sadly, no winners in our household.



Naturally, cupcakes from the tearoom followed, before we set off to explore the wider site. We wandered down to the canal for a walk, where my kids loved zipping across the wooden footbridge and watching the locks open and close as boats chugged through.

One of the biggest is Drive It Day, on 26th April, when classic car enthusiasts across the country take their treasured vehicles out for a spin simply for the joy of it. Around 300 vintage cars arrive at Crofton Beam Engines, rumbling through the country lanes and lining up around the site. It’s quite a sight, and adds an extra buzz of excitement to an already lively day. You&#8217;ll also find children&#8217;s activities, like a colouring competition and a trail.

Wilton Water is perfect for stretching little legs, as is the towpath beside the Kennet and Avon Canal. My brook loved venturing across the footbridge over the canal, before stopping to watch the boats pass through the locks. We spotted buzzards circling overhead, swans gliding &nbsp;about near the water’s edge and plenty of geese making their presence known.

You can walk for miles here, immersed in some of Wiltshire’s prettiest countryside. Little legs will happily pootle around the edge of Wilton Water reservoir, while older children and energetic adults can tackle the half-hour walk to nearby Wilton Windmill.



It’s the sort of place where you arrive planning a quick look and end up staying for hours, drawn in by the walks, wildlife and sheer amount of space to roam. Dogs are welcome on site too &#8211; just not inside.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



Good for: Families who love being outdoors, curious kids who enjoy seeing how things work and anyone looking for a day out that mixes fresh air with something a bit different. We particularly loved how up close you can get to everything, and how easily the visit turns into a full day of exploring &#8211; especially if you time it with one of the special steaming days or events. It’s also a brilliant choice for a multi-generational outing, where you can be as techy or as laid-back as you like.



Not for: Anyone expecting theme park thrills. This is more about fresh air, discovery and igniting curious minds.



The damage: Entry fees apply on steaming days, with café treats available on site and plenty of space for picnics if you’d rather bring your own.
