<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown"><strong>THE LOWDOWN</strong></h2>



<p>Part of the Upham Group, this bold, blue-fronted pub is impossible to miss as you roll into the village of Longbridge Deverill. <a href="https://www.the-georgeinn.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The George</a> is an old coaching inn, and today its position, bang on the A350 near Warminster, makes it ideal for anyone road-tripping through Wiltshire, or whizzing down the A303 to the Cornwall and the south west.</p>

<p>Arriving on a warm midweek evening, we found the garden glowing in the early evening sun. Ducks sunbathed on the river bank, while a group of cyclists wound down with a post-ride pint and overnight guests tucked into a meal.</p>



<p>Indoors, there are several nooks and rooms to explore, but our favourite spot was the bar, and not just because of the cocktails. Think wooden beams, candles tucked into empty gin bottles, roaring fires in winter and leather armchairs to sink into. This is also one seriously dog-friendly pub, complete with a dedicated canine menu (yes, really) featuring meals, chews, ice cream and even alcohol-free dog beer.</p>

<p>But where The George Inn really shines is out back. Step out the car and you’re in a huge sun-drenched garden, divided in two by the river Wylye. Giant weeping willows trail their leaves in the water, while ducks paddle about. There’s a dinky wooden duck house, and even a little waterfall burbling away beneath the pretty arched bridge.</p>

<p>Good news for parents too. The garden has more than enough space for kids to burn off steam, including a big grassy lawn, with goalposts for kickabouts. There’s also a large wooden play structure, complete with climbing wall, nets and a slide. Keen to sip on something chilled while they play? In summer there’s  a garden bar, ‘Georgino Bam Bino,’ dishing up waffles, slushies, cider and snacks.   </p>

<p>Much of the main menu at The George Inn has had a sunny Mediterranean makeover. Think sharing plates, grilled meats, flatbreads and the occasional Asian influence too, with Korean and Indian-inspired dishes. That said, there is still plenty to keep traditionalists happy, including battered haddock and ham, egg and chips. The pork and chorizo hanging kebab is also a crowd pleaser.</p>



<p>We kicked things off with three sharing dishes &#8211; calamari, tempura prawns and Korean fried sesame cauliflower. They were all delicious, but the cauliflower was the runaway hit – crispy, with just the right amount of bite and a sticky, sweet-spicy glaze. The battered squid was tender and golden, served with a deliciously garlicky aioli, and the tempura prawns and courgettes were encased in a light batter. Warning: the dipping sauce packed a seriously spicy punch.</p>

<p>Unsure whether we&#8217;d be full, we added the souvlaki chicken salad onto our order. And it was a standout success. As salads go, this one was a real looker &#8211; a riot of colour and texture, with pickled pink onions, crumbled feta, fresh coriander, pomegranate seeds, chimichurri and perfectly chargrilled chicken. It’s quite a combo, and it really works.</p>

<p>Dessert-wise, we opted to share an affogato &#8211; local Marshfield ice cream, with a shot of espresso poured over. There’s also the clever option of mini desserts, which come served with a hot drink or cocktail. Ideal if you’ve overdone it on mains but can’t resist a sweet treat. Kids (and big kids) will love the waffles, which come teamed with toppings like dulce de leche, and Oreo ice cream.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk"><strong>PILLOW TALK</strong></h2>

<p>Thinking of staying over? The George Inn has 12 ensuite bedrooms, and while they may not be flashy, they’re spot-on for what you need after a long day exploring nearby Longleat or mooching along the river Wylye. The room we peeked into had a king-size bed, a sofa bed for the kids and thoughtful extras like a Nespresso machine, Roberts DAB radio, Bramley toiletries, plus a flatscreen TV. With prices starting at £80 a night, bedrooms are decent value and make a great base.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly"><strong>DOG FRIENDLY?</strong></h2>



<p>Dogs don’t just dine well here—they can sleep over in style too. For £20 a night per pooch, they’ll get a bed, blanket, water bowl, and a welcome box of treats. Up to two per room means your whole pack is sorted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility"><strong>ACCESSIBILITY</strong></h2>



<p>The pub, dining and function rooms are all wheelchair accessible. The nature of the building (an old coaching in) means there’s unfortunately no wheelchair access to rooms, which are on the first floor.</p>

<p>When it comes to attractions, Longleat is the local heavy hitter. With its safari park, boat trips and adventure playground, there’s more than enough to while away a couple of days here. Prefer a girly get together? There’s also a popular day spa, <a href="https://www.aquasana.co.uk/">Aquasana</a>, at Longleat Center Parcs. </p>



<p>If you prefer a culture (or shopping) trip, Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge are all within striking distance, plus you’re only 20 minutes from stunning Stourhead. Dog in tow? It’s well worth climbing up nearby Cley Hill, for panoramic views over the Wiltshire countryside. The George Inn is also just minutes from Shearwater, a gorgeous lake surrounded by miles of trails and pine forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict"><strong>THE MUDDY VERDICT </strong></h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Great for groups and families, thanks to the convenient location, enormous garden and varied, shareable food. The menu offers something for everyone &#8211; from traditionalists after their haddock and chips, to those craving Korean heat. With its enviable riverside setting, <a href="https://www.the-georgeinn.co.uk/">The George Inn</a> makes an ideal pitstop, especially if you’re looking for a lazy lunch in the sunshine, or you’ve got the kids in tow. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong>&nbsp;You’ll need a taxi if you’re keen to sample the drinks menu. Alternatively, book a room and have a sleepover.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong>&nbsp;Food is wallet-friendly: five tapas for £22 felt like brilliant value, plus there’s also a set midweek lunch menu at £20.95 for 3 courses. With prices starting from £80 a night, rooms are good value too.</p>
