<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



<p>Housed in a former Great Western Railway weighbridge, this Swindon-based steakhouse oozes industrial history. Once a spot where trains and their cargo were weighed, the building later became a brewery before being taken under the wing of the Upham Group. Now, it’s one of three <a href="https://harperssteakhouse.co.uk/weighbridge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harper’s </a>Steakhouses (you’ll find the others in Haslemere and Southampton), and has earned itself a rep for dishing up quality steak, juicy burgers and lively Sunday roasts, alongside an epic cocktail menu. It’s also handily located a skip and a hop from Swindon Designer Outlet, making it an ideal post-shop pitstop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>This place is BIG – think lofty vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls and a dazzling display of glass lights floating above the bar. The sheer size of the space means it could all feel a bit stark, but it doesn’t. Twinkling trees and clever lighting conspire to give the industrial heritage surroundings a soft, more intimate glow.</p>



<p>The restaurant area feels welcoming and well-thought-out, with cosy blue banquettes and plenty of smaller tables for smaller groups. On our visit, there was a buzzy mix of big birthday gatherings, families, and groups of friends tucking in. Bonus points for the warm, friendly service – nothing was too much trouble.</p>

<p>There’s also a large central bar, which buzzes with energy, and the cocktails are clearly a draw. The drinks menu is impressive and the in-house mixologist was busy shaking his stuff for much of our visit. We loved the area with high tables and bar stools near the front – perfect for post-work drinks or a girly catch-up – while the private mezzanine area (accessed by a rather grand spiral staircase) would make a fab space for a birthday bash or Christmas do.</p>

<p>Starters set the tone: crispy calamari sprinkled with zingy chilli and spring onions, sesame chicken coated in a sticky-sweet teriyaki glaze, and a generous portion of tacos piled high with guacamole, pink pickled onions and a satisfying kick of spice.</p>



<p>Steaks are the star of the show, of course. I opted for rump, which was very reasonably priced (£20.50). It came rare as requested, tender and seared to perfection. I paired it with fries and a generous helping of rich Bearnaise sauce, plus there was a particularly delicious oven-roasted tomato on the side.</p>

<p>For those steering away from steak, there are plenty of alternatives, from pub classics to grilled sea bass and meats, and a hefty burger menu. My other half tried the pulled pork burger, stacked with crisp lettuce, nacho cheese and partnered with a pot of fresh slaw. Dirty? Yes, but also delicious!</p>



<p>The dessert menu has a refreshingly strong gluten-free offering (which is so often not the case). We tucked into a decadent sticky toffee pudding and admired the clever option of mini desserts, which come served with a hot drink or cocktail. Ideal if you’ve overdone it on mains but can’t resist a sweet treat. There’s also a very tempting selection of waffles, teamed with toppings like dulce de leche, and Oreo ice cream.</p>

<p>The drinks menu is as strong as the steaks. Alongside an impressive array of spirits and signature cocktails, there’s a really decent dedicated low and no-alcohol section. My Spicy Rita packed a punch (it really is spicy) while the perfectly mixed virgin mojito was also a hit. I teamed my steak with an exceedingly quaffable Argentinian Malbec, and found the wine list simple yet solid. There are plenty of low and mid-priced options (bottles of red start at a very reasonable £21.95), plus carafes are on offer too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disability-access"><strong>DISABILITY ACCESS</strong></h2>



<p>Plenty of (free) parking onsite and access through the main entrance. The main restaurant and bar are on the ground floor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict"><strong>THE MUDDY VERDICT</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Lively dinners with friends, party groups, a meal out with the kids (they’ll love the waffles). With Swindon Designer Outlet just five minutes away, Harper&#8217;s is also ideal for anyone after a post-retail therapy refuel, or a pre-shop brunch. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> If you’re after hushed fine dining and dainty dishes, this isn’t it. Expect a lively, social atmosphere, cocktails galore and generous portions.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> Starters from around £8, mains from £18, steaks vary depending on cut but a rump is a reasonable £20.50. Roasts hover around the £19.95 mark. </p>
