<p>A deluge of tempting new season collections are filtering on to high street rails right now. More than ever, we’re trying to shop mindfully (do you <em>really</em> need that? Will you wear it enough?) which means sifting carefully through all those shiny new SS20 trends and working out what actually works for us – our bodies, wardrobes, budgets and lifestyles. Here’s four you might like to give a whirl… and one that’s a NO from us.</p>

<h2><strong>Pretty pastels</strong></h2>

<p>Anyone for ice cream? Delicate pales shades that are good enough to eat abound this season – pistachio, mint green, baby pink and so on. They can be quite a leap  of the imagination when you’ve been clad head-to-toe in funereal tones for six months so if you’re nervous, start small with this <a href="https://lilyandlionel.com/uk/rose-leopard-scarf-2879.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">pink cashmere-mix scarf </a>(£175) from cult brand Lily &amp; Lionel. Elsewhere, Next’s Label/Mix underrated, well-priced designer collaboration range is cracking at the moment (Cefinn, Hill &amp; Friends, Madeleine Thompson Cashmere and more, more more!) – a case in point is this <a href="https://www.next.co.uk/g69362s8#118598" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Laura Jackson spring jumper</a> (£69) that’s a no brainer with blue denim. And we’re loving the renaissance of ’90s favourite dress label, Ghost. We’ve spotted their beguiling print dresses, like <a href="https://www.ghost.co.uk/jenna-dress-laras-bloom-dc23ak-w38" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">this crepe, heritage print one</a> (£120), on many a London fashion editor of late.</p>

<h2><strong>Ruffles and puffs</strong></h2>

<p>The humble shirt is making a grab for attention this season, decked out in all manners of ruffs, puffs and soup-dipper sleeves. This <a href="https://www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/White-Puff-Sleeve-Cotton-Shirt/27529" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mint Velvet white shirt </a>(£69) is anything but workaday. (Side note: Mint Velvet’s entire new Spring collection is deeply covetable – we’ll take it all, thanks.) For laidback, weekend vibes, we love this <a href="https://www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+shirts/c7ncc/chalkboard+check+cotton+ruffle+shirt.htm?clr=C7NCC_EcruAsphalt_sw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">bohemian check Toast blouse</a> (£115), the perfect accompaniment to your favourite pair of faded jeans. Ditto this <a href="https://www.marksandspencer.com/checked-ruffle-yoke-button-through-blouse/p/clp60430439?color=NAVYMIX" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">M&amp;S ruffle yoke number </a>(£35) – just add cowboy boots.</p>

<h2><strong>Cool mules</strong></h2>

<p>We were a bit wary of mules when they first started popping up a few seasons ago – a step too far back to the ’90s maybe? But they’ve grown on us. They come in a variety of heel heights so there’s something for every occasion and look wonderfully chic (just remember to moisturise your heels!) These <a href="https://www.russellandbromley.co.uk/minnie/431962" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Russell &amp; Bromley black suede bow beauties</a> (£125) are essentially posh sliders. We’d wear them with jeans by day or with a trouser suit (see below) on a night out (hurray for the rise of flat shoes for evening). If you’re looking for a mule to get your party started, <a href="https://www.kurtgeiger.com/women/shoes/sandals/heeled-sandals/fable-green-combination-synthetic-kg-kurt-geiger" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">these Kurt Geiger ones</a> (£99) are a maximalist’s dream. A riotous colour palette, diamanté, snakeprint, studs – they’ve got it all. Finally, we also spotted these <a href="https://www.kurtgeiger.com/women/shoes/flats/otter-bone-leather-kurt-geiger-london" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">white flat mules</a> (£99) with added lobster motif – aren’t they cool? They’re certainly a conversation starter.</p>

<h2><strong>Suits you, madame</strong></h2>

<p>Trouser suits are for life not just for office days. They’re an overlooked option for evening wear, ideally with a black silk cami underneath – sexy in a far more understated way than a dress. That said, they look deliciously modern with a white T-shirt and trainers for daytime. Best to head to the top end of the high street for well-cut tailoring – we like this <a href="https://www.whistles.com/collections/workwear/sonia-single-breasted-jacket-30779.html?dwvar_sonia-single-breasted-jacket-30779_color=Camel&amp;cgid=WorkwearCollection_WW#start=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Whistles one</a> (jacket £189, trousers, £129) and this <a href="https://www.jigsaw-online.com/product/relaxed-check-portofino-jacket/J39704_BL010" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jigsaw set </a> (jacket £199, trousers £140) with its jaunty navy check print. But our favourite is this <a href="https://www.reiss.com/p/wool-blend-tailored-blazer-womens-ginnie-jacket-in-bottle-green/?category_id=1129&amp;gaEeList=W%20-%20Suiting" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">super-sharp Reiss suit</a>  (jacket £235, trousers £120) in gorgeous green.</p>

<h2><strong>Er, no thanks</strong></h2>

<p>Are you ready for <a href="https://www.asos.com/asos-white/asos-white-city-shorts-in-eco-denim/prd/9346451?clr=&amp;colourWayId=15036524&amp;SearchQuery=denim%20shorts" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">double denim</a>? Nope, us neither. Be warned, the so-called Canadian tuxedo is everywhere this coming season and we’ve spotted an even more horrifying variation where the jeans in the denim jacket’n’ matching jeans combo are replaced with Bermuda shorts. Yikes. Unless you are Justin Timberlake circa 2001 or a member of Bewitched (remember?!) then avoid, avoid, avoid.</p>
