Crofton Beam Engines, near Marlborough
Crofton Beam Engines is a hidden gem near Great Bedwyn, with steaming days, classic events and countryside walks to enjoy.

Have you ever wondered how Wiltshire’s Kennet and Avon Canal stays topped up? The answer lies at Crofton Beam Engines, tucked into glorious Wiltshire countryside near Great Bedwyn. Here, two enormous steam-powered machines once pumped water from deep underground to keep the canal flowing. Now, on special steaming days, they roar back into life.
Watching engineers shovel coal into the roaring boiler is proper theatre, with flames flickering and machinery clanking into action. Upstairs, the beam engines swing steadily up and down, lifting tons of water with each stroke. It’s mesmerising and fascinating, especially for curious kids.
There’s plenty to keep families entertained beyond the engines themselves, including a tea room, children’s trails and even the odd duck race. Pop down a few steps and you’ll come to the canal and Wilton Water reservoir, both of which offer miles of fresh-air exploring, with pooches welcome to join in the fun.
Crofton Beam Engines opens for around 14 steaming days a year, usually on bank holidays and selected weekends, and special events add even more atmosphere. The nationwide annual Drive It Day is also a highlight, when around 300 classic cars roll in from across the country, rumbling through the lanes before lining up on site.
Run by around 50 passionate volunteers, the whole place feels welcoming and full of life, and is full of thrills for both the young and the young a heart. With countryside walks, homemade cakes at the Old Smithy Tearoom and plenty of space to roam, it’s a great choice for a multi-generational day out.
