Gotta Have It
Kick off autumn in style with a fab new bag. Here are our faves...Prepare yourself - they are seriously retro!
What’s fierce this season?
It’s Not Vintage… It’s Full On Retro
Good news for all you children of the ’80s (sadly that’s not strictly me but, y’know, I was a teenager then)… the totally bodacious, bad-to-the-bone bum bag collection is finally back in style, and we couldn’t be more stoked about it if we tried. Of course, designers like Givenchy and Burberry are trying to make them seem as un-bum-bag-like as possible by changing one small feature and calling them ‘belt bags’, but there’s no fooling us…
Why did bum bags even go out of style in the first place? What’s not to love? No strap slipping off your shoulder, and free hands to hold an ice cream… yep, bum bags are epic. The SkinnyDip London Patty Carnival bum bag is To. Die. For. Imagine if Rio de Janeiro and a unicorn had a baby. Exactly. Here’s a little secret: You can get tons of money off at SkinnyDip London by using a SkinnyDip voucher code. Ssshhhhh.
Phones and money keep getting smaller, yet bags get oh so much bigger. Size matters this season, and if you’re a bit of a ‘kitchen sinker’ then this is your time… bask in it, and enjoy it before tiny lanyard bags and teeny weeny crossbody bags worm their way back in. It’s happening – Burberry is trying it and little bags are super cute, sure, but they’re not going to fit a sneaky Greggs in or anything.
These oversized bags, like the simple yet sizeable Cos leather bag (which is pretty reasonably priced for Cos), could handle their fair share of steak bakes or vegan sausage rolls. Oh, but don’t pack too many in… designers like Givenchy are going all Dr. Frankenstein and creating oversized tote/clutch hybrids. Yep, massive bags with no handles. You just have to walk around cuddling them, which doesn’t sound all that bad really…
Feathers are everywhere – it seems like fabric is no longer enough, glitter has had its day and sequins are reserved only for bum bags, so the logical next step is feathers. Although I’ll admit it’s much better than it sounds.
Aviary chic is the next big thing, and what embellishment more fitting in the run up to the 2020’s than a classic 1920’s throwback? Love it or hate it, there’s a feathery style for everyone, from Staud’s subtle, down-to-earth lilac bag to the full on muppet skin of the Loeffler Randall Zadie Tote. Expect to see more of ‘feather fashion’ this year… with plenty of accompanying controversy.
Designer bags are fab, without a doubt. But we couldn’t complete this list of bag trends for 2019 without looking to one of the biggest emerging trends this year: Sustainability. ‘Upcycling’ is no longer just something for bored Pinterest users – it’s becoming a pretty hot topic in the fashion world. This season, expect to see more sustainable bag trends – bag tattoos are already doing the rounds, with brands like Tag Battoo selling tattoo-inspired patches to repair leather bags. Or do it yourself, and add a touch of colour and a splash of personality here and there. Ultimately, this season, we’re seeing trends that shout ‘hey, old isn’t old!’.
