<p>At first glance, Wadswick Country Store is about the shopping. Think two floors of meticulously curated brands, including Holland Cooper, Fairfax &amp; Favor, Barbour and Schöffel. But drift a little further in and you’ll find Forage at Wadswick, a light-filled restaurant housed in a vast barn, overlooking sweeping open fields near Corsham. It’s here that head chef Ben McCubbin works his magic, with an impressive CV that includes Lucknam Park, The Bath Priory and The Royal Crescent Hotel.</p>



<p>Ben works alongside his wife Laura, who runs front of house with calm efficiency. Together they have created an all-day dining destination that&#8217;s self-assured, and draws a crowd from miles around. The space hums with an easy, sociable buzz, plates arrive promptly, and portions are unfailingly generous. </p>



<p>A Muddy Award winner, Forage has built a hugely loyal following, not least for its seasonal supper clubs, which regularly sell out. Sundays are well worth planning ahead for, because the roasts don’t hold back. Think sirloin of Aberdeen Angus beef or lemon and thyme roast chicken, piled high with veggies, cauliflower gratin, crisp roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy. Yum.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE </h2>

<p>The space stretches across two generous floors &#8211; if you&#8217;re after far-reaching countryside views, ask for a table upstairs, looking out through the vast bifold doors. In warmer months, the first floor balcony and sun-soaked courtyard truly come into their own, plus there’s often a summer pizza station. This isn’t your average pop up &#8211; think homemade sourdough bases, topped with fior di latte and everything from wild fennel sausage to blue cheese, fig, honey and rocket.</p>



<p>Inside, Forage’s decor strikes a confident balance between rustic and polished. Simple wooden tables sit alongside booths, squashy sofas and the occasional wingback chair. Vibrant oil landscapes by local artist Michael Sutherland bring warmth to the walls, while industrial lighting, natural tones and greenery keep things contemporary. On a wet afternoon, the two large Chesterfields beside the roaring fire are prime territory, especially post dog walk. Oh and did we mention, four-legged friends are welcomed with open arms?</p>

<p>Food-wise, Forage at Wadswick covers everything from brunch to cakes and light lunches, plus roasts and mains that reflect Ben’s fine dining roots. You can keep things simple with impeccably executed classics such as truffle, ham and cheese toasties or fish and chips, or lean into something lighter like the halloumi bagel with chilli jam. But there is real depth here too. Dishes like roast cod with Jerusalem artichokes come beautifully balanced and delicately presented, a subtle nod to the technical training behind the scenes. The Wadswick Burger also draws a crowd and with two patties, cheddar, bacon, gherkins, tomato, lettuce <em>and</em> Forage burger sauce, it’s easy to see why.</p>

<p>I opted for the soy and honey duck salad and there was no skimping on the portion. It arrived looking oh-so-pretty, a generous tangle of confit duck set against rocket and watercress, ribbons of carrot and mooli. The duck was rich and tender, balanced by peppery leaves and a ginger, soy and lime dressing that kept it fresh. </p>



<p>My partner in crime opted for a brie and cranberry toastie, which was the perfect antidote to a grey winter&#8217;s day &#8211; molten cheese, with a gentle hit of tart cranberry, sandwiched on sourdough. Come dessert we were nearly beaten, but opted to share a slice of deliciously fudgy chocolate brownie, with a huge dollop of creamy vanilla ice-cream.</p>

<p>If you arrive earlier in the day, breakfast is massively worth a shout. Think homemade brioche French toast topped with homemade berry compote, or the Full Forage piled high with local sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. Phew.</p>

<p>Coffees here are consistently excellent. Forage is a Muddy go-to for a flat white and,&nbsp;if you’re hovering near the counter, the vast array of cakes and flaky pastries will test your resolve. Drinks run from Belgian hot chocolates to freshly squeezed juices, including a particularly delicious zingy green number, plus locally produced ciders, spirits and a concise but extremely well-curated wine list.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sunday-roast">SUNDAY ROAST</h2>

<p>Forage is unfailingly packed on a Sunday, and for good reason. Sunday roasts are serious business here, and you can expect a very slick operation. If you’re hoping to enjoy a slap-up lunch, do make sure you book ahead.</p>



<p>Alongside sirloin of Aberdeen Angus beef and lemon and thyme roast chicken, you&#8217;ll find the likes of loin of Padfield pork with homemade apple sauce. Veggies are catered for too, with a nut roast with vegan gravy. We tried the sirloin and the pork, and both were impeccably cooked, with crisp roast potatoes and towering Yorkies. </p>

<p>But what really elevates the feast is the excellent supporting cast. Boards arrive laden with generous bowls of seasonal vegetables &#8211; we tucked into carrots, tenderstem broccoli and parsnips, plus a gloriously oozy cauliflower gratin that could easily have been a dish in its own right. Gravy and sauces come in proper jugs and pots, a refreshing change from those thimble-size portions that require rationing.</p>



<p>There are children’s versions too, starting from a very reasonable £11.95 for the full works, minus the gratin. And if you are not in roast mode, you won’t feel short-changed. There’s a trimmed-down lunch menu includes the likes of chipotle toasties, chicken Caesar salad and soup of the day with sourdough.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-amp-about"><strong>OUT &amp; ABOUT</strong></h2>



<p>Part of the appeal here is that lunch rarely stands alone. Forage sits at the heart of Wadswick Country Store, which means a “quick bite” often turns into a full blown browse. The shop is beautifully curated, stocking everything from Holland Cooper to Dubarry and serious equine equipment. Whether you’re kitting out a yard, investing in a new pair of wellies or stocking up on supplies for your pony (or pooch), it’s all here. &nbsp;</p>



<p>Beyond the retail temptation, you’re surrounded by open countryside, with plenty of scope for a pre-lunch stomp or a post-roast wander to justify that extra Yorkshire pudding. Alternatively, pop ten minutes up the road to explore Corsham’s cobbled streets and parkland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict"><strong>THE MUDDY VERDICT</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Good for: </strong>Long lunches, proper Sunday roasts and anyone who likes their countryside dining relaxed but impeccably executed. Forage at Wadswick works just as well for coffee, cake and brunch as it does for a full-scale family gathering. Dog walkers, shoppers, multigenerational meet ups and couples on low key dates will all feel comfortable here.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Anyone yearning for hushed, white tablecloth formality or tiny plates. This is a sociable space, plus portions are pleasingly generous.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-damage"><strong>THE DAMAGE</strong></h2>



<p>Very fair for the quality and portion size. Breakfast plates hover around the £10 mark, while lunch dishes start from £13. Sunday roasts range from £13.95 to £28, making them competitively priced for the abundance and quality. </p>
