<p>Tucked away in eight acres of parkland between Lacock and Melksham, Beechfield House Hotel is one of those places where you feel your shoulders drop the moment you turn into the tree-lined drive. Built in the late 1800s for a local gentleman farmer, this honey-stone Italianate manor looks every inch the country pile. But while the building looks impressive, it&#8217;s also small enough to feel homely &#8211; the feel here is very much relaxed, not showy. Expect easygoing country house living with roaring fires, velvety sofas and a large heated outdoor pool, in a gorgeous walled garden. Open April to October, this showstopper is an absolute win, especially on a sunny day. </p>

<p>We arrived on a rain-lashed winter’s day to find fires glowing, enormous log baskets flanking the reception hearth and a warm, cosy hush throughout. Interiors blend contemporary pieces with tons of period features: lofty ornate ceilings, chequerboard tiles and vast arched windows spilling natural light through the rooms.</p>

<p>Beechfield House has plenty of nooks to claim as your own, many of which have beautiful views over the lawns or walled garden. The velvety cocktail lounge is ideal for a pre-dinner Negroni, while the drawing room offers classic country-house comfort and more formal seating. The light-filled gallery, with its double-aspect windows, is a dreamy suntrap that runs between the main house and the coach house &#8211; perfect for whiling away an hour with a book.</p>

<p>Outside, gardens stretch into lush lawns, secluded seating areas and arched stone doorways that invite exploring. Deer graze in the gardens at night, and by the entrance you’ll find wellies neatly lined up, ready for satisfying stomp. But the star attraction is the 40ft heated outdoor pool, open April to October. Enclosed by a walled garden and romantic flower borders, it feels positively Mediterranean come summer. Importantly, it&#8217;s large enough for morning lengths or an afternoon of lazing on a very comfortable lounger with a book and a cocktail. Kids, meanwhile, can tear around the hedge-lined lawns, where they’ll find football goals ready for a kickabout.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk"><strong>PILLOW TALK</strong></h2>

<p>There are 24 bedrooms, each named after the estate’s trees. All come with super-king beds, TEMPLESPA toiletries, fluffy robes and a Nespresso machine. For a real traditional country-house feel, book a room the first floor of the main house, many of which overlook the pool and rolling fields beyond. I stayed in Pear (above), which is all soothing neutral tones and dark wood furniture, topped off with a glam four-poster. A velvety sofa made it easy to curl up in front of the TV, while double sash windows gave gorgeous views over the pool and walled garden. In fact, the vista here stretches for miles, which makes for a great way to ease into the day.</p>



<p>The bathroom was generously sized and stocked with TEMPLESPA shampoo, shower gel and skin balm. My shower was over the bath and could do with a handheld attachment, but everything else was spot on.</p>

<p>For a real treat, book the Master bedroom, which has beautiful stained-glass windows in the bathroom and views over the front lawn with its vast cedar tree. Coach House rooms, like Elm, are a slipper sprint from the pool and decorated in more contemporary style, with rich tones of deep red and herby greens. Families are well catered for too – you’ll find interconnecting rooms and many bedrooms sleep up to four, with the option of sofa beds, extra z-beds and cots. There’s also a two-bedroom Garden Apartment, with its own kitchen and bi fold doors leading onto a private garden, with lounger and pool access.</p>

<p>Beechfield&#8217;s restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes and an AA Breakfast Award, and you can see why. The kitchen champions unfussy, flavour-first cooking using vegetables and herbs grown just steps away in the hotel’s garden and greenhouse.</p>

<p>We began with afternoon tea (£32.50), which was excellent. Tiered stands arrived laden with dainty, crustless sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream, and elegant patisserie &#8211; the macaron, mini cheesecake and chocolate tarte were the winners. As a gluten-free diner, I was super impressed that the GF version looked every bit as pretty as the regular afternoon tea.</p>

<p>Dinner offered even more to like. My goat’s cheese mousse with beetroot and almonds arrived looking like a work of art, with crisp leaves to balance the richness of the cheese. The pan-fried seabass was cooked to perfection &#8211; crisp skin, silky flesh and a garlicky beurre that paired brilliantly with the edamame. Across the table, my partner in crime tucked into roast pork tenderloin, teamed with Romanesco and &nbsp;sage jus.</p>

<p>Dessert was delicious and beautifully presented. The stem-ginger panna cotta, served with perfectly poached rhubarb, had just the right amount of wobble. My chocolate brownie arrived warm, topped with a generous scoop of creamy ice cream, berries and little edible flowers that made it almost too pretty to eat (almost).</p>

<p>Breakfast the next morning included a mix of self-serve pastries, cereals and juices, alongside a traditional hot menu. Think porridge with cream and brown sugar, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, grilled kippers and the works. I opted for the full Wiltshire breakfast: grilled back bacon, meaty mushrooms, perfectly poached eggs and excellent gluten-free toast. A strong start to the day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-and-about"><strong>OUT AND ABOUT</strong></h2>

<p>If you want to get out and explore, Lacock’s chocolate-box streets and film-set good looks are a two mile hop away. Mooch around the excellent indies then venture over to the abbey, where Harry Potter was famously filmed. </p>



<p>Dog in tow? You’ll find excellent walks in the area, especially if you head up towards Bowden Hill. Head a little further and you’ll reach Bowood House, which is kids’ paradise thanks to the epic adventure playground. </p>



<p>Gorgeous, Georgian Bath is just 30 minutes away, but do take time to stop off in Bradford on Avon too. With its indie cafés, canal walks and pretty architecture, it’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly"><strong>DOG-FRIENDLY</strong>?</h2>



<p>Yes. Four-legged friends are welcome in pooch-friendly rooms for £20 a night.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility"><strong>ACCESSIBILITY</strong> </h2>



<p>The Coach House entrance gives access to the ground floor, which is all on one level. While there’s no lift, you’ll find accessible ground floor bedrooms, many of which are close to the pool and walled garden.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beechfield-house-the-muddy-verdict"><strong>BEECHFIELD HOUSE:</strong> <strong>THE MUDDY VERDICT</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> A peaceful country escape, romantic nights away, relaxed weekends, pool lounging, family adventures and dog owners. Perfect for switching off and slowing down.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Anyone craving urban buzz. This bolthole is perfect for calm, not clubbing.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> After a cheeky getaway? The Winter Escape package is excellent value – for £299 (for two) you get two nights in a Splendid Classic room, a full English breakfast and a three-course dinner on your first night. Otherwise, rooms start at £108. Prices are just as reasonable in the restaurant too, with starters from £9.50, mains from £18 and desserts from £7.50.</p>
